Volunteer Opportunity - National Trails Day at Fernandez Ranch (NOT a meetup)

  • Jun 5, 2009 · 5:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

NOTE: This is just information about an opportunity to help create a section of the Bay Area Ridge Trail. It is not an actual meetup event. You will need to register with V-O-Cal (see link below) to participate.

Volunteers for Outdoor California, V-O-Cal, was founded to provide a volunteer workforce for large-scale trail maintenance and construction projects, habitat restoration and related land stewardship activities on public lands in partnership with public agencies and other non-profit organizations.

They are going to be working on a new addition to the Bay Area Ridge Trail on June 5-7. You can volunteer to help and even camp at the location. For more information, go to the following web site: http://www.v-o-cal.or...

Fernandez Ranch
Muir Heritage Land Trust
Friday, June 5 - Sunday, June 7
Project Background
Muir Heritage Land Trust acquired the Fernandez Ranch property in 2005 as part of their on-going land purchase plan. This property is significant in that it allows for a section of the Bay Area Ridge Trail to be created in a corridor that has been challenging for the overall plan through the years. The vision for the property includes a staging area along with picnic areas and an ADA accessible trail near the park entrance. Beyond the ADA trail there are several miles of planned "narrow" multi use trails. Volunteers for Outdoor California will partner with Muir Heritage Land Trust and the Bay Area Ridge Trail Council to bring this vision to reality by building one of the first trails on the property.

Trail Description
Volunteers will build up to two miles of new trail over National Trails Day in June of 2009. Working with over 200 volunteers, V-O-Cal, MHLT and BARTC will help to build a new section of Bay Area Ridge Trail on the Fernandez Ranch property. The trail will be constructed by volunteers using a variety of digging and firefighters tools. The rolling hills will make for some panoramic vistas of the grasslands of the East Bay. Volunteers will be divided into groups of approximately 8-12 and assigned to a certified crew leader who will guide volunteers in proper tool use, trail construction, safety, and fun. All tools and training are provided. This will be new trail construction which allows participants to see what the power of 200 dedicated volunteers can accomplish.

Again, to help create this trail, you need to register with V-O-Cal at this web site:
