Via Ferrata Weekend – Donnerkogel "Stairway to Heaven" (Austria)

There's a 40-metre ladder bolted into the face of the Donnerkogel. It hangs 90 metres above a deep alpine gulley — nothing but air and the turquoise shimmer of Gosausee far below. They call it the Stairway to Heaven. And once you're on it, you'll understand why.

The Donnerkogel Klettersteig above Gosausee is one of the most iconic via ferratas in the Austrian Alps. You ascend 470 metres through a four-stage route of slab traverses, vertical rock faces, exposed ridgelines, and the legendary Himmelsleiter — all with the Dachstein glacier towering across the valley and two glacial lakes glittering beneath you.

This is a 2-day weekend trip — Friday afternoon drive from Prague, overnight in Gosau, Saturday on the wall. Back in Prague Saturday evening.

⚠️ This is NOT a beginner route.

The Donnerkogel is graded C/D overall, with two serious crux sections and sustained exposure throughout. The Sky Ladder itself is graded B — but the psychological challenge of a 40-metre traverse suspended 90 metres above the void is something else entirely. There IS a bypass if you decide it's not for you on the day — no shame in that.

You need:

• At least one previous via ferrata experience (grade B or higher)
• Comfort with sustained exposure and vertical terrain
• Reasonable fitness for a 3–4 hour technical climb with a pack
• A head for heights

🗓️ Day 1 — Friday 27 June: Drive to Gosau

🚗 15:00–18:00 — Depart Prague (flexible)
Gosau is ~3.5–4 hours by car from Prague. We coordinate carpools in the WhatsApp group — exact departure time agreed between drivers and passengers, somewhere between 15:00 and 18:00. Nobody drives alone, fuel gets split fairly.

🏘️ ~19:00–22:00 — Arrive Gosau, check in
We stay at a local Gästehaus or Pension in Gosau. See accommodation section below for details and options.

🍺 Friday evening — dinner together
There are a few good spots in Gosau village for a proper Austrian dinner. Great chance to meet the group, go through the plan for the next day, and get to bed at a reasonable hour. Early start on Saturday.

🗓️ Day 2 — Saturday 28 June: The Climb

🚗 ~08:30 — Drive to Gosausee
Short drive (~10 min) from Gosau village to the Gosausee base station parking (P1/P2/P3). €10/day, card or cash. Arrive early — lots fill up fast on summer weekends.

🚠 ~09:00 — Gosaukammbahn cable car
Cable car runs from 08:15, every 15 minutes. Ride up to the Gablonzerhütte station. €24.50 return, card accepted.

🥾 ~09:30 — Approach walk
~20 minute walk along trail 611 to the Törleggsattel, then a short descent to the via ferrata entrance. Gear up, safety check, clip in.

🧗 ~10:00 — Via ferrata — 4 stages

Stage 1 (A/B) — Warm-up. Moderate slab climbing, good holds, find your rhythm.

Stage 2 (C) — Things get serious. Steeper walls, first real exposure. The valley opens up below you.

Stage 3 (C/D) — The crux. Vertical rock faces, sustained difficulty. Full commitment.

Stage 4: The Sky Ladder (B) — The moment. 40 metres of iron rungs suspended across a deep gulley, 90 metres of empty air beneath you. Maximum 3 climbers at once. Step out, and don't look down. Or do — it's spectacular either way.

Bypass available around the ladder. You rejoin the route on the other side, no questions asked.

Everyone climbs at their own pace — checkpoints at each stage transition so the group stays connected.

🏔️ ~13:30 — Grosser Donnerkogel summit (2,054m)
360° views: Dachstein glacier to the south, Gosaukamm ridge stretching west, both Gosau lakes below. Take your time. You've earned it.

🥾 ~14:30 — Descent
~1.5 hours down via the marked hiking trail to the cable car station.

🚠 ~16:00 — Cable car down
Last descent at 17:00 — don't cut it close. Regroup at the Gablonzerhütte terrace. Firm meeting point for the whole group.

🍺 ~16:30 — Cold beer at Gosausee
Mandatory. The lake, the mountains, the satisfaction. You'll want this.

🚗 ~17:30 — Drive back to Prague
Back in Prague around 21:00–21:30.

🏨 Accommodation & Commitment

This is a 2-day trip with limited spots (max. 5 people). To keep things reliable for everyone, your RSVP only becomes binding once accommodation is sorted. Here's how it works:

Option A — Group accommodation (recommended)
I'll book a Gästehaus or Pension in Gosau for the group. Once the booking is confirmed, you pay your share of the accommodation cost directly to me via Revolut or bank transfer (IBAN). You'll receive the booking confirmation as proof. Your spot is secured once payment is received.

⛺ Fallback: Camping
Gosau is a popular summer destination and rooms can sell out fast on weekends in late June. If no suitable accommodation is available by the time the group is confirmed, we camp — there are several campgrounds in the Gosau valley (e.g. Campingplatz Gosau, ~€10–15/person/night). In that case, bring a tent or flag in the WhatsApp group if you need to share one. Either way, the trip goes ahead.

Option B — Sort your own accommodation
Prefer to book independently? No problem — just let me know in the RSVP questions so I can plan group size accordingly. You're still part of the trip, just sleeping elsewhere.

🌤️ Weather & conditions

We do a weather check 3 days before and a final call Friday morning in the WhatsApp group. If conditions are unsafe (thunderstorm risk, wet rock, high wind), we postpone. Via ferrata on wet rock is significantly more dangerous — if rain is forecast, we don't go. Period.

Day Hike + Underground Via Ferrata – Štěchovice to Žampach Mine

You hike through one of Bohemia's most beautiful river valleys, following the oldest marked trail in the Czech Republic. Then you descend into an abandoned gold mine and climb 70 metres straight up through the darkness on iron rungs bolted into the rock. Two completely different worlds. One unforgettable day.

The Posázavská stezka between Štěchovice and Žampach was built between 1914 and 1924 — the very first marked hiking trail in the country. It hugs the Sázava river valley through dense forest, past dramatic viewpoints over the confluence with the Vltava, and across the 42-metre Žampach viaduct. The kind of trail that makes you forget you're 40 minutes from Prague.

And then, at the end of the trail, you go underground.

Důl Pepr is the first underground mine via ferrata in the Czech Republic. A former gold mine turned into a 70-metre vertical climbing route through narrow shafts, chambers, and passages — all deep inside the rock. Headlamps on, harnesses clipped, and up you go through the Vysoké Mezipatro (the "High Mezzanine"). It's dark, it's tight, it's unlike any via ferrata you've ever done.

This is a two-for-one day — proper hiking in the morning, underground adventure in the afternoon.

Who's this for?
Anyone with decent fitness for a 16km hike and no claustrophobia. The via ferrata is guided with all gear provided — no prior climbing experience needed for the mine. You DO need to be comfortable in tight, dark spaces underground.

🗓️ The day

🚉 07:00 — Meet at Praha-Braník station
Find us on the platform for the S8 direction Čerčany. Look for the group with hiking boots and backpacks. Be there by 07:00 — the train doesn't wait.

🚆 07:11 — S8 train departs
~60 minutes to Stechovice station. Tickets on the PID Lítačka app or at the station. Cost: ~50 CZK one way.

🥾 ~08:00 — Trail start at Stechovice
We pick up the Posázavská stezka and head south along the Sázava river. The trail is well-marked (red blazes) and follows the valley through forest, past viewpoints, and across the iconic Žampach viaduct.

Trail highlights:

We hike as a loose group with checkpoints at the viewpoints and at the viaduct. Everyone goes at their own pace — no pressure.

🍽️ ~12:00 — Lunch break on the trail
Pack your own — there's no restaurant on the route. We'll find a nice spot with a view.

🏔️ ~13:30 — Arrive Žampach / Důl Pepr
Trail ends right where the mine starts. Perfect timing.

⛏️ ~14:00 — Underground Via Ferrata: Vysoké Mezipatro

This is the wild part. You descend into the old Pepr gold mine and climb 70 metres vertically through underground shafts and chambers.

🔹 Guided by trained instructors — max 12 people per group

🚆 ~17:30 — Train back from Jílové u Prahy
Short walk from the mine to the station. S8 back to Praha-Braník. ~45 minutes, back in Prague by 18:15.

Somewhere near Braník. After hiking 16km and climbing through a mine, you'll need it.
