This hike starts from Cobb Estate gate via the Lower Sam Merrill trail to Echo Mountain then takes Castle Canyon trail to Inspiration Point Saddle up Mt. Lowe summit via the East trail for lunch, then to San Gabriel Peak. This hike ascends almost the whole way up. On the way down we take the Sunset trail back to Lower Sam Merrill trail.

Distance: 16.5 miles approx.

Elevation Gain: 4,400 ft approx.

Hike Time: 7 hours approx.

Difficulty: Moderately Strenuous

Trail Condition: OK, a few difficult spots, and some snow possible in shaded places and on north slope of San Gabriel Peak trail.

HikeType: Loop

Bring: 3 liters of water, snacks, lunch, boots, hiking poles, rain/wind breaker, jacket, hat, gloves. Ten essentials.

Getting to the Trailhead:
From the I-210 Foothill Freeway in Pasadena, exit at Lake Avenue. Drive north for 3.4 miles to the end of Lake Avenue (where it intersects with the terminus of Loma Alta Drive running east and west). Park along the street, read signs. The hike begins to the right of the stone gateway on the east side of the street.
