Kathryn has never been to the Grand Canyon and I really enjoyed the hike from the South Rim to the River and can't wait to go back.

We tried to get a "cheap" room for her Spring Break but everything at the Rim is booked. There are "cheap" rooms in the cabins at the Bright Angel Lodge (right on the South Rim) available in October 2012 so that is when we are going.

The Plan:

We plan to drive to the Rim on Saturday and take an easy hike west along the rim to watch the beautiful sunset via the Hermit's Rest Trail. A free bus ride will take us back.

Sunday morning we will get up EARLY and hike the short distance to the bus stop for the Hikers Express Bus. This free bus will take us to the South Rim trailhead for the South Kaibab Trail. Hiking down this fantastic trail around sunrise is the best. I did it in Oct 2011. We will hike to the Colorado River with a possible short side trip to the actual Phantom Ranch. Then we have the long and challenging hike from the river back to the South Rim via the Bright Angel Trail. The more adventurous hikers can add in another side trip to Plateau Point.

This is a challenging hike. You start at about 6,800' and hike down to the river at about 2,500' and then you have to hike back up. It is a long hike, about 17 miles.

Please do not sign up for this hike unless you are trained and fully prepared. I do not plan to sweep. You are responsible for completing the hike.

Those of you with limited time can drive back to Southern California after the hike. I have done it twice and prefer not to do that this trip.

We will sight see and hike along the South Rim on Monday and return home Monday afternoon/evening.
