Sugar Pine Lake loop

Details

Description: Come to beautiful Sugar Pine Lake in the Foresthill area. This is an easy, low impact hike that loops around the reservoir. It is paved most of the way. We'll cross some creeks (there are bridges). The trail follows along the shore and is paved for the most part. The dogs will get plenty of water play. This is a popular trail, but not too bad this time of year. There are picnic tables and another vault toilet about half way around the lake where we can take a break. . The last part of the hike is on a dirt trail with some hills.

Time: Plan to arrive at 8:45 am to get your gear organized. We'll begin walking at 9 am.

Duration: 4.5 mile loop

RSVP based on the number of dogs not people.
1 dog = attend
2 dogs = +1

We hike at a leisurely pace to enjoy the scenery and to give the dogs play time.

Trailhead Directions: From I-80, take the Foresthill Exit to Foresthill Rd. Follow Foresthill Road for 25 miles. Turn left at Sugar Pine Road and continue for about 8 miles to the dam. There is a small parking lot on the dam where we will meet (it's on the right before you cross the dam). There are other parking locations but they have fees.

WARNING! Don't trust your GPS if it wants to take you up to Colfax and down through Iowa Hill unless you want to take a step back in time. The road is twisty and windy, one lane and scary in parts.

Plan your travel time accordingly from your departure location. It's about 1 1/2 hours from Sacramento.

If you need a restroom, there is a vault toilet at the boat ramp which you will pass before you get to the dam. We will also walk by the boat ramp at the beginning of the hike.

What to bring:

  • Lunch and/or snacks for you and your pup
  • Water (plenty for both you and your pup)
  • Friendly pups
  • Hat and sunscreen
  • Camera
  • Poop bags - you must pick up after your dog
  • Dress in layers, we never know anymore what the weather will be!

We hike off leash as much as possible. We leash the dogs when needed for other dogs and some people. You must have voice control over your dog if you allow it off leash and keep your dog in sight. Do not let your dog roam out of sight.
