Today's adventure also introduces: Slate Mountain Trail.
IT WILL BE OUR FIRST STOP In the cool air of the high country, just below the iconic San Francisco Peaks and the Snowbowl.
Slate Mountain is a perfect pick on days when you want maximum views for the minimum amount of climbing possible. It’s a fairly quick trip to the summit (about 2 miles), from where you can see the epic mountains of the Kachina Peaks Wilderness.
This trail leads to one of the best views in the Coconino National Forest without brutal, exhausting climb to either Humphrey's Peak or Kendrick Mountain, yet relatively few people seem to know it exists. After this we will proceed by car, just short 15 minutes to the Red Mountain volcano.
