Magpie Mine and Monsal Head (optional weekend)

The first of two weekend walks led from the picturesque village of Over Haddon. This 12 mile walk passes 2 Peak District landmarks and some classic White Peak scenery along the way.

The first stop will be the atmospheric remains of Magpie Mine, an old lead mine used on and off for over 300 years. From here we head through the secluded nature reserve of Deepdale, emerging to follow the river Wye through Monsal Dale. Lunch will be on the river Wye, with an opportunity for a dip should anyone want to brave it 😃. The impressive Monsal Head Viaduct will follow with an ice cream/ toilet stop.

The return journey will pass through the beautiful village of Ashford in the Water with its medieval sheepwash bridge. Then it's back up and over fields to Over Haddon for a well deserved pint at the Lathkill Hotel. This overlooks Lathkill Dale which will lead nicely to Sundays walk 😊
