A Mexican woman (Lumi Cavazos) falls in love, but bound by tradition to take care of her mother, she puts her passion into her cooking...

Afonso Arau directed this 1992 production from Laura Esquivel's adaptation of her 1989 debut novel. Embodying themes of Mexican culture and a "magical realism" style, it became North America's top-grossing foreign-language release. It dominated that year's Ariel Awards (Mexico's Oscars), being named Best Picture.
