Details

A 17th-century country boy (Michael York) goes to Paris, meets three soldiers (Oliver Reed, Frank Finlay and Richard Chamberlain), and gets involved in international intrigue.

There have been many movies based on Alexandre Dumas' 1844 swashbuckler novel, but the 1973 one, directed by Richard Lester from a George Macdonald Frasier script, may be the most fun! (Back in the 1960s Lester had considered casting the Beatles as the Musketeers.) A handsome production with lots of slapstick humour, and pretty close to the book. The exceptional cast includes Raquel Welch, Christopher Lee, Faye Dunaway (as the villainess Milady) and Charlton Heston (as Cardinal Richelieu).

Next week we'll show the 1975 sequel The Four Musketeers.

A watch party for historical movies on Friday nights.
