In 1930s England a butler (Anthony Hopkins) chooses between love and duty.

Director James Ivory, screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala and producer Ismail Merchant, who'd previously directed Hopkins and his costar Emma Thompson in Howard's End, reunited for this 1993 adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro's 1989 novel. (An earlier version was considered, with Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons to be directed by Mike Nichols from a Harold Pinter script, but didn't get made.)
