The Devils
Details
France, 1634: a priest (Oliver Reed) investigates sexual hysteria among a group of nuns that includes Vanessa Redgrave.
The notorious Ken Russell wrote and directed this 1971 production, based on John Whiting's 1960 play, which had been based on Aldous Huxley's 1952 book The Devils of Loudun. Its release was accompanied by censorship battles and huge controversy. (Glenda Jackson turned down the Vanessa Redgrave role: "I don't want to play any more neurotic sex starved parts.")
