Little Island & Gansevoort: Novice Volunteer Trip - 2 mile round trip

This trip is open to those who have volunteered in 2025 during our public program events. Our public program will start again in May 2026.

HCCB is completely volunteer run. Our guides generously take time out of their busy schedules to run trips and trainings. If you RSVP yes, please consider this a commitment to attend. If you cancel or no-show, you take a spot away from someone else. Hosts reserve the right to temporarily or permanently ban you from all their meetups if you cancel within 8 hours or are a no show.

Novice Volunteer Trip - Little Island & Gansevoort Beach - 2 mile round trip

Let's cross to Manhattan, check out Little Island, and visit Gansevoort "Beach"! Note this landing can be very tricky, so plastic kayaks are preferred.

PREREQUISITES TO RSVP:

1. Volunteered 4 full embayment shifts in 2025
   AND
2. Completed a sea kayak/SUP training in 2025 with our boathouse and you felt comfortable in your craft with no issues keeping up.
   AND
3. You show full control of your kayak/SUP, you can launch/land independently and have completed a wet exit in 2025

COME PREPARED:

• At least 1 working and charged all-around white waterproof light
• Appropriate clothing for water and air temperature, no cotton. Wetsuit/drysuit may be required. We may have a dry suit if you want to borrow
• Water in a reusable bottle or hydration pack
• Food if you plan to picnic or cash/credit to buy food there.
• Sun protection - hat, sunglasses, sunscreen
• Change of clothes in a dry bag

CRAFT:

• Sit on top - not recommended
• Sea Kayak - must have completed a wet exit in 2025
• OC1/OC2 - Have a Ke Aloha coach contact host to make sure you are a supporting paddler and have approval to paddle small OC boats
• SUP - must have completed 1 training with us in 2025 and a short trip out of the cove
• Surfski - must have completed 1 training with us 2025 and a short trip out of the cove

TIMELINE:
12:15 PM Arrive at the boathouse
12:30 PM Safety briefing hard cutoff to arrive. Whoever does not make it by this time will not be able to join
1:00 PM Move boats to the beach
1:15 PM Depart from HCCB
1:45 PM Hang out at Little Island for 15 minutes
2:00 PM Arrive at Gansevoort
2:15 PM Land and stash boats

90 minutes to eat and relax

3:45 PM Meet at boats, prepare gear, return safety briefing
4:00 PM Depart from Gansevoort
4:45 PM Arrive at HCCB
5:00 PM Clean, put away equipment, and debrief
5:45 PM Trip ends
