Guide Training

Spring is here! Let's start getting ready for our 2023 season and train on how to guide and teach others

Be on time. Get ready quickly. It's getting dark early. Let's maximize our time on the water.

When you sign up, you'll be placed on a waitlist until the host makes sure you are part of the 2024 guide training class. If you are not but have volunteered and trained with us in 2023 you may rsvp but please be aware that future guides will have priority.

Bring a towel and a warm change of clothes!

Prerequisites for all:
*You can prepare all your equipment in 5 - 10 minutes with little or no assistance
*active volunteers who helped us run our embayment program in 2023
*Priority will be given to the 202guide class

Current volunteers, join us for a training session!

This training is meant for current volunteers who have volunteered at at least one public embayment or the Hudson River Cup in 2023.

Water temp is still cold, therefore wetsuits/dry suits are required. Bring non cotton clothing and plenty of layers.

Experienced volunteers, please come practice and share your knowledge! The best way to learn is to teach. We may stay inside the cove or take a short trip on the river.

PREREQUISITES TO RSVP

1. Volunteered at least once in 2023 OR at the Hudson River Cup in 2023
2. You promise to help us for at least 2 embayment shifts in 2024

COME PREPARED

• Quick drying clothes
• Change of clothes
• Towel
• Sunscreen, hat
• Water in a reusable bottle

TIMELINE

6:00 PM - Meet at HCCB. Prepare equipment. Safety briefing
6:20 PM - Move boats to beach
6:30 PM - Practice in the cove or take a little trip
7:40 PM - Return to boathouse
8:00 PM - Clean and put away equipment
8:30 PM -Training ends

We'll paddle around the entire island of Manhattan.

It'll take 10 hours, we'll travel 30+ miles, on 3 rivers, and under 21 bridges! This will be an amazing, yet a very challenging trip. You must be able to paddle at least 3 knots per hour for the 9+ hours.

PREREQUISITES TO RSVP:

1. volunteered at least 2 shifts in 2023
   AND
2. Completed 2 advanced trips in 2023 (or 1 advanced and 2 intermediate )
   AND
3. You have proven that you can paddle 1 mile (including turns) in under 15 minutes in the craft you are planning to paddle

CRAFT:

• Sit on top - not allowed
• Sea Kayak - Level 3
• OC1/OC2 - Ke Aloha supporting paddlers with a Ke Aloha coach approval. Must have coach contact host with approval prior to RSVPing
• SUP - only if completed 10+ mile round trip in 2021
• Surfski - not allowed

COME PREPARED:

• Clothing appropriate for water temperature. Wet suit or dry suit
• Change of clothes
• Extra layers for when we stop. You will be cold
• A white waterproof light. And lots of others!
• Water in a reusable bottle. So much water
• Lots of food
• Anything else you may need to spend 12 hours on the water
