Intermediate Volunteer Trip - Morris Canal & Surf City - 7.5 mile round trip

HCCB is completely volunteer run. Our guides generously take time out of their busy schedules to run trips and trainings. If you RSVP yes, please consider this a commitment to attend. If you cancel or no-show, you take a spot away from someone else. The host keeps the right to temporarily or permanently ban you from their meetups if you cancel within 12 hours or are a no show.

Because there will be very little help and against some current on the way there, this will be an intermediate trip.

Let's paddle to Jersey City and land right before the NY harbor. You'll enjoy amazing views and even get a glimpse of Lady Liberty from the water.

We'll explore Morris Canal Basin, then go to Surf City once it opens at noon. If for some reason there isn't enough dock space, we'll land at Morris Canal Park.

Please be mindful of others and arrive on time. Check the cut off time to arrive under the timeline. Check the prerequisites, things to bring, craft prerequisites and detailed timeline all below. Make sure you are okay with everything below before RSVPing.

PREREQUISITES TO RSVP

1. Volunteered at least 4 public programming shifts with our boathouse or Hudson River Cup in 2025
   AND
2. Completed 1+ trainings in 2025
   AND
3. Completed a wet exit in 2025
   AND
4. Completed an intermediate time trial
   AND
5. Attended a novice trip and felt strong and comfortable throughout

CRAFT PREREQUISITES

• Sea Kayak - Completed a sea kayak training in 2025 and felt comfortable in your kayak. Completed a "wet exit"
• Sit on Top - Maybe. You would have to be very strong. Contact host before RSVPing if you want to paddle a sit on top
• SUP - Completed a training and a 1-2 mile trip on a SUP in 2025 and felt you were able to keep up with the group
• Surfski - self recovery within 30 seconds on both sides; weather dependent. Pls contact host for approval before RSVP.
• OC1/OC2 - You must be a Ke Aloha supporting paddlers and have a Ke Aloha couch contact host with approval before RSVPing. Landing area for outriggers may be difficult

COME PREPARED

• Quick drying clothes
• Towel
• Change of clothes
• Sunscreen
• Hat
• Water in a reusable bottle
• Food to eat on the dock OR money/card to buy food at Surf City
• BRING AN ID if you want to go into Surf City!
• Anything else you may need to spend 2+ hours on the water

TIMELINE
9:30 AM Arrive at the boathouse
9:45 AM Safety briefing hard cutoff to arrive. Whoever does not make it by this time will not be able to join
10:15 AM Move boats to the beach
10:30 AM Depart from HCCB
11:15 AM Arrive at Morris Canal, paddle to the end of the canal and back
11:45 AM Arrive at Surf City
12:00 PM Land and stash boats

90 minutes to eat and relax

1:30 PM Meet at boats, prepare gear, return safety briefing
1:45 PM Depart from Surf City
2:45 PM Arrive at HCCB
3:00 PM Clean and put away equipment
3:45 PM Trip ends
