Holistic Living: Exploring the Seven Dimensions of a Well-Rounded Life
What does it mean to live a truly holistic life?
Most of us tend to focus on one or two areas—career, relationships, health, or perhaps personal growth. But our overall sense of well-being may depend on how we’re doing across several different dimensions of life, and how those dimensions interact with one another.
I’ve been developing a simple framework that looks at seven dimensions:
• Friendship & platonic relationships — connection, community, and meaningful friendships
• Romantic relationships & sexuality — intimacy, partnership, and romantic connection
• Vocational life — work, career, purpose, and contribution
• Responsibilities — the necessary parts of life that may not always be enjoyable but still require our attention
• Recreation & pleasure — hobbies, play, entertainment, travel, and activities that bring enjoyment
• Spirituality & meaning — questions of meaning, values, purpose, and our relationship to something larger than ourselves
• Physical health — exercise, nutrition, sleep, and caring for our bodies
One of the ideas behind the model is that these dimensions are deeply interconnected. Improving one area may have positive effects on others, and sometimes strengthening several areas together can create an effect that’s greater than simply adding them up individually.
For example, better physical health might give us more energy for relationships and recreation. Stronger friendships might make life more enjoyable and meaningful. More fulfilling work might affect our sense of purpose and even our relationships.
I’m also interested in exploring whether greater fulfillment across these dimensions might influence the way we think and perceive our lives. We all experience cognitive biases and distortions, and perhaps some of these patterns can be connected to unmet needs, frustrations, or imbalances in our lives. Could a more well-rounded and fulfilling life help us see ourselves, other people, and our circumstances with greater clarity? That’s something I’d like us to explore rather than assume we already know the answer.
But this isn’t meant to be a finished model—or a prescription for how anyone should live.
I’d like this Meetup to be a place where we explore and develop the model together. Maybe there are dimensions I’ve overlooked, or perhaps some of these categories should be expanded, combined, or redefined. Different people will naturally place different importance on different areas.
Every two weeks, we’ll explore ideas, share experiences, and look at practical ways of creating more balance and fulfillment across the different dimensions of our lives. We can discuss questions such as:
• Which areas of our lives are thriving, and which ones might need more attention?
• How do the different dimensions affect one another?
• What practical changes could make our lives more balanced and fulfilling?
• Can we intentionally create more pleasure, meaning, connection, and progress in our everyday lives?
• What can we learn from one another’s experiences?
You don’t need to have a particular philosophy or approach to holistic living. You simply need to be curious and open to exploring different perspectives.
My hope is that this becomes a collaborative experiment: a space to think, share, experiment, and perhaps gradually develop a more complete model of what it means to live a well-rounded life.
Come with your ideas, experiences, questions—and even disagreements. The model is meant to evolve.
