Tavern Time!
Start Line Brewing Co, 151R Hayden Rowe Street, Hopkinton, MA, USAugust is a hot month, in Hopkinton, so let's cool off with some fine ale (or non-alcoholic beverages) at Startline Brewery. That's right, it's Tavern Time!, our semi-regular get-together for drinks, conversations, and general hanging-out. This time, we will discuss "Red Nails", the classic Conan the Barbarian story by Robert E. Howard. This tale inspired the classic Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (AD&D) adventure module "Dwellers of the Forbidden City" and has elements that are old school gameplay, including morally ambiguous protagonists, conflicts between factions of nonplayer characters, and a story that ends in a bloody, violent climax [Sorry for the spoilers, but what did you think would happen?]. It also features Conan's sometimes companion, the pirate queen Valeria, a rare example of a strong female character in the pulp fiction that inspired AD&D. The book is available in the public domain and is fairly easy to find online, in print or audio form.
