What we’re about
At least once a month at HoustonPhotowalks.com, we drum up some crazy idea for a place to photograph and practice our photo techniques. We're a fun bunch, no pressure, no stress. Come ready to learn and share what you know among other photographers.
Check out our Member Discounts, Sponsors and other cool stuff on our Good Stuff page: https://houstonphotowalks.com/member-perks/
This group is perfect for new camera owners, novice hobby photographers, and old dogs that have been shooting photos for a long time.
Our group has 3 main principles that guide our way:
• Fun and Safe (we want you to have a great time, and not die).
• Honor the amateur photography clubs that came before us. Their enthusiastic interest in photography paved the way for the technology evolution that allows us to capture light today.
• Education, of ourselves, each other and the community. We learn our best techniques from each other, and we teach the community that photographers aren't jerks, criminals or terrorists.

Photowalk: The Woodlands Waterway Holiday Lights

Tripods and remote releases are recommended. This is a popular area for people to visit, meaning there will be a lot of other people, so please be conscious of this a you're walking/photographing.
Sunset is at 5:49 pm and twilight ends at 6:19 pm.
The long-term forecast calls for clear weather. That said - note this is a rain or shine event (unless the weather calls for torrential downpours).
PARKING
There is paid parking in the area. Free parking is available at The Woodlands Mall, which is in ( sort of) walking distance. If you plan on parking at The Woodlands Mall, I would suggest parking in the parking structure near The Cheesecake Factory - which is within walking distance (a couple of blocks).

Photowalk: 2025 Christmas Morning Abandoned Downtown, 11th annual!
Market Square Park, 301 Milam Street, Houston, TX, USJoin us on Christmas morning for our yearly tradition. This relaxed stroll through downtown Houston is a chance to enjoy the quiet city, connect with friends, and take some great photos.
WHY PHOTOWALK ON CHRISTMAS DAY?
Downtown Houston looks and feels completely different on Christmas morning. It's peaceful, wide open, and perfect for exploring with a camera.
- Market Square Park was once Houston’s original town center, dating back to the mid-1800s.
- There are colorful murals and old architectural details that are easier to spot when the streets are empty.
- Photographers love the long street views, reflections in shop windows, and quiet corners that are usually full of traffic.
EVENT DESCRIPTION:
We'll meet at Market Square Park at Preston and Travis Streets and take a relaxed walk through downtown. There's no set pace and no pressure. Just grab your camera or phone and enjoy the peaceful side of the city.
Christmas morning is one of the quietest times to photograph downtown. With fewer people and hardly any traffic, you'll be able to capture scenes that are hard to get any other time of year. Look for holiday decorations, old buildings, and quiet intersections that feel like you have the whole city to yourself.
This event is perfect for anyone looking for something fun and calm to do on Christmas morning. Whether you’re using a pro camera, film, or just your phone, you’re welcome here. All skill levels are encouraged to join.
IMPORTANT INFO:
- There may still be some cars, so please be alert when crossing or standing in the street. If a car is coming, shout "CAR" to keep everyone safe.
- Wear closed-toe, comfortable shoes for walking.
- December mornings can be chilly, so dress warm. Ugly Christmas sweaters are encouraged!
PARKING:
City parking meters are not enforced on Christmas Day. You can usually find free street parking along Preston Street and Travis Street near Market Square Park. Some private lots may still charge, so city street parking is your best bet.
RSVP AND PAYMENT INFO:
- If you need to change your RSVP, please post a comment below so others know a spot has opened up.
- Rain or shine, no refunds, no transfers.
- See (our FAQ webpage)[https://houstonphotowalks.com/faq/] for Payment, RSVP, and other questions.

Join Houston Photowalks and me, Joe Lippeatt, for an unforgettable 7-night Alaska photography cruise departing Seattle on August 15, 2026. We’ll mix guided excursions, workshops, and free time so you can capture the wild beauty of Alaska your way.
Our trip starts with a photowalk in Seattle, WA, including a visit to iconic spots like Pike Place Market, right next to the original Starbucks. Then we board our cruise and head to Alaska. Along the way, we’ll stop at several scenic ports, take photography classes focused on improving your travel shots, explore places like Victoria, BC, and enjoy plenty of opportunities to photograph Alaskan landscapes and sea life, even right from our balcony rooms.
WHY CRUISE TO ALASKA WITH US?
If you love photography and travel, this trip is a win. You’ll get to:
- Sail aboard the elegant Holland America Eurodam, with high-end dining, comfortable staterooms, and onboard amenities.
- Explore iconic and remote Alaskan ports: Juneau (with a whale‑watching photo excursion), Glacier Bay, Icy Strait Point, Sitka (private photo excursion), Ketchikan, and Victoria.
- Take part in onboard workshops, informal photo hangouts, and photowalks in ports where I’ll guide you, or give you time to go your own pace.
EVENT DESCRIPTION:
This cruise is about combining exploration, creativity, and good company. During the voyage, I’ll lead several classes on photography techniques, composition, and how to make the most of light in challenging environments. We’ll have two guided shore excursions (glacial landscapes + whale watching) and photowalks at other stops. Between sessions, you'll have “on‑your‑own” time to wander, shoot, or relax at your speed.
On your way out of Seattle, we’ll likely take a photowalk in the city or waterfront area, giving everyone a chance to adjust gear, meet each other, and grab some urban frames before venturing north. As we cruise, expect dramatic light, changing skyscapes, glaciers, marine wildlife, and coastal dramatic vistas. At each port, you’ll see local culture, rugged coastlines, forests, and wildlife — so plan your lens choices accordingly.
Whether you’re a beginner, enthusiast, or seasoned shooter, this is a perfect trip! Even if you bring just a smartphone, there will be something for you. The pace is designed to balance guided learning and your own creative time.
