Golden Flower Meditation
Lorenz Gude and Kevin (Liu) Zhao
Lorenz Gude and Zhao Liu (Kevin) will jointly lead a workshop on Golden Flower meditation. Lorenz will share his firsthand experience practicing techniques from the Taoist classic The Secret of the Golden Flower, particularly following JJ Semple’s interpretation augmented with the experience of other practitioners such as Gopi Krishna and Forrest Knutson.
In 2009, these methods led Lorenz to a Qi (energy) awakening—often described as a Kundalini experience— unmistakably triggering new sensations in the body and awarenesses in the mind which have continued to drive personal growth. Lorenz will discuss how this ongoing transformation gradually cleared a lifelong fog of moral and spiritual confusion. However, he will also address the risks involved: because it takes practitioners outside of ordinary socially constructed understandings of reality it can trigger serious mental difficulty if not approached carefully.
Kevin, a native Chinese speaker, will compliment Lorenz’s personal experience with insights from original Chinese sources, generally unknown in the West. A comparative study between the Kundalini system from India and the Microcosmic Orbit and Dantian system in Chinese Taoism is attempted to reveal some fascinating perspectives on our human body. Trained in Western medicine, Kevin also aims to bring together modern science and traditional wisdom in this workshop.
This one-day event will be interactive, offering attendees an opportunity to share personal meditation experiences, explore individual questions, and learn Semple’s meditation techniques directly. Whether you are new to meditation or experienced in energy work, this workshop will provide both practical information and a broader theoretical understanding of Golden Flower practices.
Lorenz Gude grew up on a dairy farm in a small town in the northeastern United States and graduated from Columbia in 1964 majoring in English Literature with minors in Comparative Religion and Art History. After working as a photographer in New York, he took a ‘Master’s Degree in Educational Media’ from Southern Illinois University in 1968 and began to teach in higher education eventually coming to Australia to teach at Curtin University in 1976. Leaving Curtin in 1988 and he retrained as a therapist in the early 90s and, after retirement, shifted his focus to spiritual practice. Looking back, his core interest has been human spiritual development -his own and that of others - initially based on the study and practice of Jungian psychology and reaching a critical developmental point in 2009 when my interest in spiritual ideas graduated to spiritual experience through Golden Flower meditation.
Liu (Kevin) is from China and has a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery from Peking University. Trained in Zhao modern science and keen on traditional mysticism, he aims to weave the threads from both worlds when exploring human body and consciousness. Equipped with a Jungian lens developed in Australia, he has completed a one-year I Ching training program with teachers from the China Society of Analytical Psychology.
