What we’re about

The Denville String Band is a concert and marching band in the style of the Philadelphia Mummers bands who call their bands "string bands” even though there are many instruments besides strings.  We are based in Denville, NJ and perform concerts at community events, festivals, summertime gazebos, and indoor venues such as retirement facilities and nursing homes throughout northern New Jersey.  We also march in community parades in colorful costumes in the style of the Philadelphia Mummers bands.  The  Band is very popular and we keep busy.  Over the course of a typical year, we do approximately 12 parades and 20 concerts spread roughly evenly throughout the year.

The Band consists of 15-20 amateur musicians of all genders and ages from high school to retired.  Band members perform without compensation.  We play traditional popular classics from Tin Pan Alley up through the 1960s.  Our music is up-tempo, happy music.  There are no slow or sad songs in our repertoire.

We're always interested in new band members.  If you play one of our instruments (sax, banjo, guitar, clarinet, string-bass, accordion, drums) we'd love for you to come to a rehearsal, bring your instrument, and sit in.  Of course, there is no commitment on your part but we guarantee you’ll have fun.  It’s also a chance for you to get in a lot of playing time with experienced musicians which should improve your playing.   There is no fee or dues and all amateur musicians are welcome.

Rehearsals are normally Monday evenings, 7:30-9 PM at our historic 100-year old clubhouse at 10 Station Rd in Denville.  Sometimes rehearsals are cancelled when we have a gig so it's best to check the schedule before you come.  Send a message to the organizer if you are coming so we can watch out for you.
