Kant's Cave: French Rationality in 'The Age of Reason' - Tom Rubens

Details
(this talk was originally scheduled for Aug 4, but now will be happening on Sept 1)
This talk will examine the achievements of France's 'philosophes' in the 18th century. The emphasis will be laid on the historical and social contexts of French thought in this period; and, in that connection, some reference will be made to preceding European thought in the 17th century. The aim will be to convey the immense importance and forward-looking character of the work of the 'philosophes'--much of which anticipated further developments in the 19th century.
Tom Rubens writes chiefly in philosophy, but also in fiction and poetry. He has published eight books in the first category, and also a trilogy of novels and a selection of poems. Visit Tom's website for further details.
This event is sponsored by the Royal institute of Philosophy.
