About us

The Peninsula Outdoor Painters group (POPs) was established in 1977 by a group of plein air painters. We paint on Tuesday mornings at the same location for two consecutive weeks, then we move to the next location. Our group welcomes painters at every skill level.
Guidelines to remember when painting with our group

Please yield to walkers, bikers and equestrians.
Try to avoid blocking walkways and trails. Please set up to the side of a trail.
Please stay on designated trails
Please do not dump any dirty paint water or solvents.
Please leave your painting area spotless, please leave no trace, so that we may return.

A 22 acre garden with unique sculptures, historic buildings such as the Main House, Jennings Pavilion, Water Tower and Carriage House. Beautiful flower beds, redwoods and many mature trees. Interesting life size metal sculpture of a horse.

Lake Merced
Lake Merced lies within San Francisco's Lake Merced Park, which is 614 acres in size. The lake and surrounding park provide critical habitat for birds and wildlife and a stopping point for birds on the Pacific Flyway. In addition to bird-watching, the lake provides boating and fishing opportunities and a 4.5 mile path around it is enjoyed by walkers and bicyclists.

Mark Monsarrat Memorial Plein Air

This special event is to honor long-time POPS member Mark Monsarrat who passed away on January 26 after bravely battling glioblastoma. Mark was one of the original members of POPS and he inspired many of us. His passing is much too soon. It is a tragic loss to the art world and everyone who knew him. We are unaware of anything being planned for Mark in the Bay Area, although funeral services will be in Columbus, Ohio later this month. One of his many Bay Area friends suggested a simple paint-out which is something that Mark would have liked. So please paint as usual, and when we gather for lunch we will share our stories about him. You are welcome to spread the word across Mark's eco-system.

Mark's paintings

Baylands offers a range of painting subjects including a duck pond and beautiful views across the tidal marshlands to the Eastern and Western hills. Many shorebirds. It is an important stopping place on the Pacific Flyway for migrating birds.
Parking
At the duck pond there is a small parking lot where you can park and paint. Alternatively, drive past the duck pond to the large parking lot for Bay views across tidal marshlands to the east and west that are very popular with birds.
Restrooms
Porta-potties at the duck pond parking lot and another is a 3 minute walk on a sandy trail from the south end of the large parking lot
Lunch and Mark's Memorial at 12:30
Meet at the picnic tables with your paintings at the far end of the large parking lot.

Montara State Beach

Montara State Beach
This is a large beach with stunning views to the north and south. Wildflowers abound starting in late Spring and lovely walking trails wind through through them. At the south end, stairs lead from the parking lot to the beach
Parking
Free. There are two parking lots at the south end of the beach - one at either side of a large vacant restaurant building. Roadside parking on compacted dirt is available towards the north end.
Restrooms
Several portapotties are in the south parking lot. They are usually clean.
Lunch at 12:30
In the south parking lot you will see a closed restaurant building where there is outdoor seating and views of the ocean. Meet there with your painting and lunch box.
