## Classic Buddhist Stories: The Ruru Deer & The Hare on the Moon
San Diego Shambhala Meditation Center (Zoom)
Wednesday, October 7, 2026
7:00–8:00 PM (PT) • Online via Zoom
Facilitated by Pascale Dellefield
Join us for an evening of meditation, storytelling, and contemplative discussion as we explore two beloved Buddhist Jātaka tales: The Ruru Deer and The Hare on the Moon.
### The Ruru Deer
A remarkable deer saves a man from danger, only to later face the consequences of that man’s broken promise. Rather than responding with hatred or revenge, the Ruru Deer embodies compassion, integrity, gratitude, and the strength to remain grounded in principle even when trust has been violated.
### The Hare on the Moon
A hare is tested alongside other animals and discovers that, having little material to offer, he is willing to give of himself completely. His response becomes a powerful symbol of generosity, selflessness, compassionate intention, and the bodhisattva spirit.
Through meditation, storytelling, and group discussion, we’ll explore:
- Compassion and integrity
- Generosity and selflessness
- Gratitude and intention
- Sacrifice and wisdom
- Giving without attachment
- The bodhisattva path
- How to offer ourselves skillfully
We’ll also consider an important question:
Does genuine generosity always require self-sacrifice, or can wisdom help us understand when and how to give?
Together, we’ll reflect on how generosity can arise not only through material giving, but also through our time, attention, presence, courage, and willingness to benefit others.
No previous knowledge of Buddhism or the Jātaka tales is necessary. Everyone is warmly welcome.
