Geo-hikers,
Hopefully, the weather will be dry by 1/10/2026. Route: We'll hike the Oakbrook Vista trail to the crest of the ridge. Go left along the old dirt road that follows the crest of the sandstone ridge line until it intersects a power pole pad, take a break, and turn around and return to the vehicles (~5.0 miles round trip, 1300 ft up). Trails are wide and easy and hike will be at a moderate pace (~2.0 to 2.5 mph), there will be no sweep. This is an in-and-out hike on same trail. I'll bring a geologic map and mention the geology to those interested. Point of geologic interest about 1 mile into the hike: an angular unconformity* where about 40 million years is missing.
* time-rock gap in the stratigraphic record with a geometric discordance in the layering.
