Does science rule out faith? MIT Professor and UCSF Fellow present strengths and weaknesses of Science in addressing the Christian Faith
Atheists might argue that Science has essentially disproved Christianity, and thereby justify their rejection of God and religious values. To assess the plausibility of this case requires understanding the basis of science, whether it has intrinsic limitations, and in what areas of life it is reliable. Although the atheist’s claims are mistaken overreach, there are some interpretations of the Bible that are possibly inconsistent with what Science now tells us about the world. This event will explain the strengths and weaknesses of Science in addressing the Christian Faith, but also the strengths and weaknesses of Theology in investigating the workings and history of nature.
Ian Hutchinson is a Plasma physicist and Professor of Nuclear Science and Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He is a frequent speaker on the relationship between science and religion and authored two books on the topic titled Can a Scientist Believe in Miracles? and Monopolizing Knowledge. Dr. Hutchinson received his B.A. in physics from Cambridge University in 1972. He then received his Ph.D in Engineering Physics from Australian National University in 1976, where he was a Commonwealth Scholar.
Sam Perli is a Stem cell scientist and a Research Fellow at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He is pastor of Hue Church and has led Groups Investigating God (GIGs) engaging the thinker and the believer alike. Dr. Perli received his B.Tech in Electrical Engineering as a topper of IIT Madras in 2008 winning the prestigious Institute medal. He then received his S.M. and Ph.D in Computer Science and Molecular Biology respectively from MIT in 2015 and is currently pursuing an MDiv at Fuller Theological Seminary.
We, the Hue Church are a start up church in the SF Bay Area. We love our neighbors and have put together this event to share this love with you. At the event, you will also have an opportunity to catch a glimpse of our vision for the bay area and beyond as well as possibly receive a free copy of Ian Hutchinson's book Can a Scientist Believe in Miracles?
Free childcare will be provided for ages 1-8. Parking spots are available around the building. You will find Hue signage directing you to the event.
