Thursday Zoom coffee talk!
Note that the RSVP list usually understates the number of attendees by quite a bit. We do get a good turnout and we do have great conversations. Everybody is respectful of each other and everyone gets to talk more than enough. We are continuing to be on Zoom only for this weekly event.

Sunday Speaker Topic:
Homelessness and Housing Affordability in PhoenixDescription:
The Greater Phoenix area has seen large increases in homelessness and housing prices in the past few years. This will be a conversation about many of the factors that contributed to the problem and how we can all take action to help.In the past few years, the Greater Phoenix area has seen huge changes in both its housing market and in rates of homelessness. These problems have become unavoidable in our lives and are applying strain across many sectors of our society. In my talk I will examine several of the root causes of the issues we are currently facing; including homelessness as an issue of morality versus economics, the lingering impacts of the 2008 housing crash, the intersection of zoning and construction, and many other factors. We will then look at the actions available to elected officials, industry professionals and citizens to reverse these trends.

- Leaving Religion Discussion Group - on Google MeetLink visible for attendees
This discussion group will be on Google Meet.
Video call link: https://meet.google.com/keo-xqwz-mkqThe process of deconverting and leaving your religious beliefs behind is challenging, and it can impact many areas of your life. Know that you are not alone. This meet-up is designed to provide a welcoming place for each person to share feelings, thoughts, and stories, or to simply listen to others.
This is not meant to be a counseling or therapy group. We are meeting and talking to others who have gone through similar experiences, which can be comforting. You’ll meet former believers who are now atheists or agnostics, or in the process of deconstructing their beliefs. This group is intended to support those who have let go of their religious and supernatural beliefs rather than individuals seeking new religious or spiritual beliefs or identities.
The topic for May's meeting is: Humor. How has humor changed for you since you have left religion? Where do you find humor now? Or, how do you keep things light-hearted?
Limit 12 people
We meet 90 minutes once a month at the Humanist Society of Greater Phoenix (Google Meet for now). Humanism is a secular philosophy that encourages critical thinking and ethics.
Let’s enjoy some great conversation and get to know some awesome people. Join us.
Your host, Elizabeth
- SMART Recovery Support Group - MondaysHumanist Community Center, Mesa, AZ
Are you or somebody you know suffering from an addiction to a substance or behavior? Are you looking for a secular support group for those addictions?
We all know about other 12-step groups and the lack of a scientific basis for support, but what about programs for the non-believer? Introducing, SMART recovery!
There are meetings every Monday and Tuesday. This event is free and open to the public.
Our Purpose
To support individuals who are struggling with addictive behaviors (substances or activities), as well as the concerned significant others of people who struggle with addictions. Our program is evidence based, and helps participants build and maintain motivation, cope with urges, manage thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and live a balanced life. Our facilitator is also trained in assisting family members. We focus on learning how to help without "enabling", how to set boundaries, and discussing self-care activities. Our Approach
- Teaches self-empowerment and self-reliance.
- Encourages individuals to recover and live satisfying lives.
- Teaches tools and techniques for self-directed change.
- Meetings are educational and include open discussions.
- Advocates the appropriate use of prescribed medications and psychological treatments.
- Evolves as scientific knowledge of addiction recovery evolves. If you wish to attend but prefer to RSVP confidentially, send a Meetup Message to one of our hosts. Need to know more? Check out their videos: SMART Recovery
See you there!
