About us

HumVeganity Bay Area inclusive events
We are a social group that strives to be inclusive for the widest possible variety of people. In order to be as inoffensive as possible to as many as possible our events have some guidelines.

  • Food restrictions: the single rule that covers the most edge cases for various dietary restrictions is to serve only plant-based food. (Even calling it "vegan" offends both "lifestyle vegans" and insecure meat eaters) Plant-based covers dairy allergies, most food borne illness concerns, a large portion of kosher and halal rules, and of course those who avoid meat for health or other reasons. It does exclude a very tiny number of people who can't digest fibrous material due to medical issues, but even among that set the conflicting restrictions in diet make unplanned food sharing impossible so any general rules around food restrictions are hardly going to increase inclusiveness for them, but we will have events that are not centered around food, most of them in fact, so they can still join in.
  • Propaganda and proselytization restrictions (AKA the no cult rule): Don't try to sell your ideology to other people while at our events. This goes for religious, political, animal rights, or any other contentious topic. We are pro-human rights and pro-environment, because a survivable environment concerns humans. We are also pro-inclusivity, so anyone defending those concerns gets a pass. We love philosophy, so friendly discussions about any topic between open-minded individuals will be allowed, but if one party is closed-minded and unable to use reasoning or create arguments that are responsive to the information they've been told then the conversation should be immediately concluded as that person is in effect engaging in proselytization.
  • Drug use restrictions: Whatever your drug of choice, alcohol, caffeine, anything, some people can't or won't use it. So in order to include those people, we can just not have these drugs at our events. While sugar is considered a drug by those in the know, it is nigh impossible to eliminate sugar :(
  • Technology restrictions: Not everybody appreciates ubiquitous surveillance by monopolistic corporations, so, non-consensual photography and other sorts of recording is to be avoided. We will practice exclusion of the exclusionary. Technologies that require sign up to use or are not interoperable are going to be avoided. If you are pushing technologies that exclude people you will be confronted.

We are community based if you want to help out or run your own event we will support you.

Previous group description:
HumVeganity events are open to folks of all persuasions - omnivores, vegetarians and vegans. Some say HUMANity, we say VEGANity. What's the difference? Veganity is the vegan way of being human. It's not for all creatures - and perhaps not for all humans. But for those who embrace its delicious healthful bounty – through a variety of reasons including, health, morality, spirituality, environmental impact, animal welfare and animal rights – there are limitless benefits.

Join us for delicious dinners, lunches and brunches, recipes, hikes, bike rides, sailing on the bay, and other activities. All with vegans, vegetarians, raw foodies and any folks interested in learning more about living and eating on the food chain closest to the sun. Want to post your vegan-related event here? The more the better - let's share the ideas and the events! Email me or any of the other organizers and we'll either post your event, or you can become an organizer so you can manage your own events – as many or as few as you'd like. Just let us know and we'll make it so.

Jonathan Safran Foer's latest tour de force "Eating Animals" that compelled the likes of twenty-year vegetarian, Natalie Portman, to become a vegan activist. Safran's book compels us to realize that while the human species may have always been omnivorous to one degree or another, never before have we as a group so deliberately, with such cold and blind thoroughness, abandoned our reverence for animal rights and welfare.
