Host: Mike Clancy[masked]
Note: The Storm King lot holds about 30 cars and is on the northbound side of Rt.9W which is a divided highway. If not familiar with this area, pay attention as the lot is easy to pass. It's on a series of sharp curves.
The Hike: Moderate pace (not slow). ** Microspikes or similar traction will be needed for part of this hike!! The hike starts at 9:00am so please arrive a little earlier. If late, just catch up. Come join us for a fun, but sometimes strenuous hike on Storm King Mountain with great views of the Hudson, Breakneck Ridge, Mt. Taurus , Schunnemunk, and other points of interest.
From the Rt. 9W parking lot, we will take the Orange trail up several short, steep rock scrambles to Yellow. Turn right on Yellow and take in the 360 views from Butter Hill viewpoint. After a brief stop, go downhill a short ways and turn left on Blue/Red to the lower north side of the mountain. After about a half-mile, turn right on Yellow and ascend on the north slope of Storm King (expect lots of icy spots here). We'll pass several great viewpoints while circling the top of Storm King on the Yellow. Upon coming to a Blue Trail, turn left. We'll then descend on Blue into the valley between Storm King and North Point. After several stream crossings and going uphill a bit, turn left on White, an old logging road. We'll connect with Blue again and turn uphill. We'll hit some other nice viewpoints on the way up to North Point. We'll take a lunch break at North Point (at about 5-mile mark). After lunch, We will continue the loop back through the valley and to the parking lot.
**Although we encourage members to stay together as a group, members who move at a more leisurely pace must be able to follow the trails if falling behind. There will be no sweeper following the last hiker(s).
