** You must have prior experience hiking similar Catskill peaks in icy winter conditions.
The hike is 6.6 miles with a 2000 Elevation gain. We start from Giant Ledge Trailhead.
Pace will be moderate for winter hiking, 1.5-2mph
Estimated Hike Time: 3.5-4.5 hours
Route description: 6.6 miles distance, 2000 feet of total elevation gain. We go up the yellow trail a short way to a junction at the ridge line. Turn left and take the blue trail over Giant Ledge (big views!) and then slightly down before the final climb to Panther. Back the way we came.
Panther Mountain: 3,847 feet elevation. The trail to Panther features a mix of rugged terrain and serene forests, culminating in a summit that boasts expansive views of the Catskills, the Hudson Valley, and beyond.
Panther is one of the four 3500'+ Catskill mountains that must be climbed twice (once in winter) to gain entrance to the Catskill 3500 Club.
Giant Ledge: offers a breathtaking vantage point with a series of rock outcrops that provide panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
What to bring:
Gear: Moisture-wicking clothes; clothing for very cold, windy conditions; water; snacks/lunch; microspikes, trail crampons or similar multipoint traction with sharp teeth; snowshoes; headlamp

Getting there: Take the New York State Thruway to exit 19: Kingston. Keep right after the toll for Route 28 west. Follow Route 28 almost 31 miles to Big Indian and turn left on County Road 47. Take County Road 47 just over 7 miles and park on the right at the hairpin turn.
