This is a short paddle that explores the terminus of the Wappinger Creek as it drains into the Hudson River. The water will be tidal as it meets the Hudson. It's a nice little paddle that offers nice views of the creek's steep bank that has prevented development. We'll paddle as far north as we can on the creek passing by the old bleachery which in its heyday almost a century ago employed over 1,000 people but then was abandoned for decades and only recently is starting to see a rebirth. We'll then paddle back down the creek and out into the Hudson River, circumnavigate an island with interesting development, and then turn around for the return paddle.
We will go to Obercreek Brewing afterwards, which is only a minute or two away: 59 Marlorville Road, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590 https://obercreekbrewing.com/visit/
On weekends they usually have a food truck there.
Directions: From I-84, take exit 41 onto Route 9D North. After 5 miles turn left onto CR-28 also known as New Hamburg Rd. (The left turn is at the pink Nesting Dolls house.) After about a mile, turn right onto Creek Road (don't go over the creek). Pass the entrance to Reese Park on your right. On your left is a parking area and ramp down to the creek.
NOTE: You are responsible for bringing appropriate gear, supplies, clothing, first aid, and lights. You should review topographic maps, tide charts and river features carefully; understanding these is key to your knowing where you are, where you're going, and how to get back.
