This is not a beginner hike and will include some challenging terrain. We'll have a moving speed of around 2.2-2.5 MPH. All Attendees must have the ability to keep pace and/or navigate on their own if needed. Well-behaved dogs are always welcome on my hikes, but they are unfortunately forbidden at the pool, museum and zoo at Bear Mt. Only bring your dog if you plan on skipping the after hike stroll.
Be sure to bring your bathing suit and a towel if you plan to swim, and bring gear so you are ready for a hot and sunny day.
Hike Snapshot
Total Mileage: approximately 7 miles
Total Elevation Gain: approximately 2200'
Estimated Hike Time: approximately 3.5-4 hours including breaks and lunch near Perkins Tower, but not including the after-hike activities
Some steep climbs, great views, and mild rock scrambles at Anthony's Nose and Major Welch. We will first hike the scramble to the Nose, enjoy the view, and then descend back to the road on the AT. We then walk over the bridge (people can also bail out prior if they choose) and take the short route around Hessian Lake to start climbing Major Welch. After reaching Perkins Tower, we'll head over to the viewpoint and have lunch or a snack before descending down the AT back to the parking lot (once again, people can choose to bail out here). Finally, we'll check out three areas of the park that many hikers have never visited: the Pool, the Museum, and the Zoo. At this point the official "hike" is over and everyone is on their own, but you are welcome to join me for the rest. I will likely skip the pool, FYI, but we will see it as we stroll to the zoo and museum and you can head down there if you prefer to beat the heat. One end of the museum exits out to the entrance to the bridge, where we will walk back across to our cars to end the day.
I expect to finish this hike portion in about 3.5-4 hours including breaks, so be sure you are comfortable with that pace before you sign-up and/or are fine with hiking out on your own. We'll add another hour or two for the sightseeing portion if you so choose. Be sure to have a paper and/or digital map and know how to use it so you can navigate as needed.
For everyone's reference, many of the trails we typically enjoy in the park are still closed from the July 2023 storm. Refer to the following closure map for more details:
