Details

Hike Length=15 miles
Combined elevation=4,550'
Route type=loop
Trailhead=Santanoni Range Trailhead (44.06913, -74.06166)

The Santanoni Range is a challenging and very remote hike in the Adirondacks, known for its rugged terrain, mud, and lack of marked trails. It is typically saved for the latter stages of a 46er journey. The hike involves crossing bridges, following herd paths, and navigating through rivers, bogs, and rocks. The Santanoni Peak, at 4607 feet, is the highest in the range and is part of the ADK 46ers. The route includes significant elevation gain and loss, with a maximum grade of 1,700 feet in 1.3 miles. The Santanoni Range offers spectacular views, especially from Santanoni Peak, and is best experienced with a clear route and careful navigation.

These three peaks are the some of the more remote in the High Peaks. No official trails lead to their summits; it's all herd paths here. The three mountains are: Couchsachraga, (46th highest at 3820 ft.), Panther Peak, (18th highest at 4442 ft.), and Santanoni Peak (14th highest at 4607 ft.). Technically, Couchsachraga, is not one of the 46 highest peaks in NY, because it is under the 4000 foot requirement, but due to an early measuring mistake, it is still required to do to become a 46er. It's tradition! "Couchsachraga" is based on an Algonquin or Huron name for the area, meaning "dismal wilderness". It is known for swampy trails, so pick the right boots and stay on the herd path.

### How to get there

parking for hiking the Santanoni Range, follow these steps:

Make sure to arrive early, as parking can fill up quickly, especially during peak hiking seasons.

## Hiking

Hikers can enjoy a loop option when hiking this range or out-and-back; either way, it's a challenging hike over rugged terrain, but with spectacular views and tremendous rewards. There are no trail markers for much of this trip; navigation by map & compass or GPS will be useful, but there is a herd path that traverses the range.

We'll start walking Santanoni Road from the parking area, which is a gravel road that leads to a private hunting camp. After ~1.8 miles we will turn right onto the Bradley Pond Trail. At the junction with the Santanoni express trail we will bear right staying on the Bradley Pond Trail. When we get to the junction with the Panther Brook Herd Path we will make a left and follow the herd path to Times Square. At Times Square we will make a right and do an out & back to Panther Peak. After returning back to Times Square we will make a right and follow the Couchsachraga Trail and do an out and back through the Couch bog to the summit of Couchsacraga. After returning back to Times Square we will follow the Santanoni Trail to the summit of Santanoni Peak then take the Santanoni Express Trail back to Bradley Pond parking area. This range has been notorious for being some of the wettest trails in the Adirondacks and for good reason.
