Description: 10th ANNUAL Mt. Beacon Fire ~Tower Hike and reservoir hike~ "WORK UP YOUR APPETITE HIKE" Thanksgiving Morning
Let's celebrate and give thanks for HVH, The Mountains and the new friends we've made and continue to make on these events. Let's give thanks for allowing us to challenge our minds & bodies through these hiking journeys.
*** If everyone cares to donate some cans or other shelf stable foods, we will donate them on behalf of Hudson valley hikers to Hudson Valley Food Bank in Cornwall *****
Route: Here's the route:
- Take the red Casino Trail one mile to site of former casino/hotel.
- Continue on red one mile to white trail.
- Turn right onto white. Take white several hundred yards to tower.
- Return back to red
- Continue on red to yellow.
- Left on yellow to blue.
- Left on blue about 250 yards to an old woods road that goes to the left.
- Take the woods road to the paved reservoir service road.
- Go left on the road for 100' to the white trail that's on the right.
- Enter woods and continue on white trail to the yellow trail.
- Turn left onto yellow and continue to the red casino trail.
- Turn right onto red and continue to parking lot.
Distance: ~6 miles
Elevation gain: ~2,000'
Pace: a casual/moderate 2.0-2.5 mph average pace.
Duration: approx 2-3 hours including stops at viewpoints
Difficulty: first mile is all uphill; rocky trails; presence of ice is possible on some trails.
Gear: appropriate footwear; foot traction; sunscreen; water; snacks/lunch; poles may be helpful
Views: All directions
Map: NY/NJ Trail Conference map for East Hudson trails; Avenza phone app for Hudson Highlands Park trails; or similar maps or apps.
TRAIN ACCESS:
GRAND CENTRAL DEPART: 6:56 AM
ARRIVE BEACON: 8:32 AM
If you post a need for a ride, you may be able to catch a ride with a generous HVH member.
GEAR:
Hiking boots or trail runners, long pants, wicking layers, long sleeve shirt, mid layer, and jacket. map, digital map or hiking app, water, phone, sunglasses, hat, gloves, water, snacks.
Dogs are welcome, just have a leash available if needed.
Bob's Mountain Corner Store is open near the trailhead for snacks, sandwiches, gatorade, coffee...... etc.
