Open Source Distributed Tracing Workshop

Details
Time: 7:00 pm Central European Time (10 am Pacific Time)
Who this workshop is for:
- Anyone who wants an overview of Jaeger, Hypertrace or Distributed Tracing in general.
Overview:
Distributed Tracing is a must for developers, SREs and the operators of Microservices-based apps & platforms. In this short workshop you will learn how to use distributed tracing to better understand and troubleshoot your microservices-based applications.
Speaker Bio: Pavol is a Sr. Software Engineer at Traceable AI where he works on Jaeger, Hypertrace, OpenTracing, OpenTelemetry, and all things tracing! Prior to Traceable, Pavol worked on Jaeger & OpenTracing at Red Hat.

Agenda: (Pacific Time)
10:00 AM Introduction
10:10 AM Root cause analysis
10:20 AM Performance / Latency optimization
10:30 AM Hands-on Exercise
10:45 AM Service Dependency Analysis
10:55 AM API Exploration
11:10 AM Hands-on Exercise - Exploring Your Application
11:25 AM Additional Use Cases & Review
11:40 AM Q&A
11:45 AM Continue discussion in Slack
Detailed agenda:
Part 1: We begin by showing you how to use distributed tracing to view your application architecture and answer these questions:
- What are the Services in my app?
- What are the internal and external APIs in my app?
Part 2. We drill down into a service that has errors. We will show you how to find a trace, it's components, the API calls, the critical path and overall latency of the request.
- Which services take up the most time
- What is going on in that service.
Part 3. Hands-on lab (optional)
You will be given a simple app with instructions to modify one of the services so it can send traces to a distributed tracing server (Jaeger or Hypertrace). You will follows instructions to identify the following:
- Root cause analysis
- Performance / latency optimization
Part 4. We will demonstrate how to use a application topology map to perform a service dependency analysis which will enable you to view all of all of the services in your application.
Part 5. We will explore API calls using the Explorer view in Hypertrace. You will be able to run ad-hoc queries across all traces shared by an application.
Instructor: Pavol Loffay, Sr Engineer, Traceable.ai
Assistant Instructors: Jayesh Ahire, Ronak Kothari & Rishabh Singh
