SKEPTICS FORUM: How You Found Your Way to Humanism — A Storytelling Afternoon
Details
Humanism is a progressive philosophy of life that, without supernaturalism, affirms our ability and responsibility to lead meaningful, ethical lives capable of adding to the greater good of humanity.
A storytelling afternoon
Every path is different—and every story helps others understand their own journey.
Tell Your Story Behind your Journey to Humanism
Many people who have left religion feel a strong desire to share their journey with others who understand. Moving away from a religious tradition can be thoughtful, complicated, sometimes difficult—and often very meaningful.
We’re hosting a storytelling afternoon where members can take the stage for a few minutes and share how they moved from religion toward reason, skepticism, or Humanism.
Was there a particular moment that changed your thinking?
A book, conversation, or life experience that opened a new path?
Or were you raised without religion and arrived at Humanism another way?
It will also be interesting to see whether any common patterns emerge. Do people tend to follow similar paths? Are the journeys different for women and men, younger and older people, or people from different religious traditions?
Stories can be simple and informal—just 5–7 minutes about one moment, realization, or turning point in your journey. You don’t need to be a polished speaker. Just tell your story in your own words.
If you’re not sure where to begin, you might talk about:
- The first time you began questioning what you were taught
- A book, conversation, or lecture that changed your thinking
- A gradual process that unfolded over time
- Challenges with family or community during your transition
- What Humanism means to you now
We’re hoping to hear from 6–8 volunteers.
If you’d be willing to share your story, please email:

There will be our regular cake and coffee. Bring your own other drink. Please contribute $5 cash to offset the library and food cost at the event. If $5 is tight right now, just come on in anyway. We want you there and we won't ask you about it.
