See all- Improv 301 Class with Asa Erlendson starts Sept 9th!Dairy Center for the Arts, Boulder, CO
Improv 301 is an exciting and engaging intermediate-level 8-week class designed for those who have a foundational understanding of improv comedy and are ready to dive deeper into the art form. This course will introduce you to the basics of the Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB) style of improv comedy, known for its focus on finding and playing the "game" of the scene.
Pre-requisite: We expect you to have taken Level 1 & 2 improv classes prior to enrolling in this course.
In Level 3, you will explore several key components that are essential to mastering the UCB style:
- Thematic Montage: You will learn how to create cohesive and entertaining thematic montages, where scenes are connected by a common theme or idea, allowing for greater depth and creativity in your performances.
- Game of the Scene: Central to UCB improv, the "game" of the scene involves identifying and heightening the unique comedic premise that emerges organically within the scene. You will practice recognizing and playing these games to make your scenes funnier and more engaging.
- Acting: Strong acting skills are crucial for any improviser. You will work on developing believable characters, emotional commitment, and dynamic scene work that enhances the overall performance.
- Object Work: Mastering object work is essential for creating a believable and immersive environment on stage. You will practice using imaginary objects convincingly, adding richness and detail to your scenes.
- Beginning Group Games: Group games are a staple of UCB-style improv, bringing multiple players together to create spontaneous and collaborative scenes. You will learn the basics of initiating and participating in group games, focusing on listening, support, and building a strong ensemble.
Throughout this course, you will engage in a variety of exercises, scene work, and group activities designed to hone your skills and boost your confidence as an improviser. Our experienced instructor and top Colorado improviser, Asa Erlendson, will provide personalized feedback and guidance to help you grow and succeed in your improv journey. You might know of Asa from the hit improv team, Mouse Couch!
