Indie Game Jam 5: One Up!

Details

Come down to The Port on July 21st to join us for a day of development!

This meetup is for all people currently invested in making indie games! If you've spent time working alone on a project and would like to take your work into a public work space to make meaningful progress alongside others doing the same thing this is exactly the place to do that. Our long form meetup is intended to allow for an organic mixture of socializing and head down working time not often found in other game meetups.

Join us on this magical adventure through multiple informative and entertainingly written bullet points!

We have only 11 (non Port Coworking member) spots available, so please update your RSVP as soon as you find out if you are unable to attend!

Our Schedule:

  1. Meet up at 2:00, filter in, set up, start working!

  2. Stand up at 3:00 or 3:30 depending on attendance. Everyone has 30 - 90 seconds to introduce themself and their project, what they want to do, and so on. If you have a demo beyond this to show, we can do that afterwards and you can take 5 minutes to show people your progress!

  3. Pizza at 5:30! Break, talk, and socialize for a while.

  4. Work until late! Late can be as late as 2:00 AM, often people filter out a bit earlier which is fine, but you are absolutely encouraged to stay till 10:00 at least, and several people stay till 12:00.

What you can look forward to being provided with at our meetups:

• A relaxed atmosphere and an open space to work. Most people have specific projects they are working on, some people work on music, or game design, or art, or programming projects. All of these are encouraged!

• Time to spend on your project! The biggest thing about this meetup is that it runs for about 10 hours on average. This is primarily work time, and while discussion and socialization is encouraged, the longer format of this meetup is intended for sinking into meaningful project focused effort.

• A space to show progress month over month. Between standup and an optional demo you can share progress with members and get feedback on your games! Don't worry if you haven't got much progress though, the primary focus is hours to work, nobody will give you a hard time for having a busy month between meetups.

• Pizza sweet, savory, saucy, just how you like it. Pizza. Feel free to pitch in, but do not feel obligated to! We appreciate all our members for taking their precious weekend hours to join us in solidarity making games!

What to bring:

• Bring your own project! We don't do pre-assigned groups or projects. Most of the time people are working on self-contained projects and not explicitly looking for more team members, so it's for the best if you have your own work to do. We don't discourage collaboration in any respect, it just isn't officially guaranteed or supported by the organizers. Feel free to ask around, but expect to work on your own unless you have set something up ahead of time.

• Know the basics! While we encourage reaching out for help and discuss tools and techniques with other members, it's best to come with some level of proficiency so you can get the most out of your game jam. In the same way it would be hard to participate in a music jam or art jam without knowing any instruments or how to draw, it's hard to really fully appreciate a game jam without knowing at least some element of game development! If you have enthusiasm but no knowledge that is easily fixed! Check out Unity, download Photoshop, investigate your options and plan your meetup!

• Bring your enthusiasm and enjoy a laid back meetup with like-minded individuals all working on various projects in a shared setting!

Important to know:

• This is not a networking, recruiting, or job seeking event. While some members have professional industry experience, this is a time for folks of all levels to focus on creating/hacking/building/etc! It's okay to let people know if your company is hiring, but this is not the focus.
