The Hairy Ape is a 1944 film based upon the 1922 play of the same name by Eugene O'Neill. It was directed by Alfred Santell and adapted by Robert Hardy Andrews and Decla Dunning. The film stars William Bendix, Susan Hayward, John Loder, Dorothy Comingore, Roman Bohnen, Tom Fadden and Alan Napier. Ship stoker Hank Smith (William Bendix) is a mountain of a man, but he is still very sensitive. So when the beautiful spoiled socialite Mildred Douglas (Susan Hayward) insults him with the slur "hairy ape," her words cut deep. At first the beastly Smith wants revenge for the insult, but after he thinks about it, he's more confused than anything else. After his ship docks, he departs into the city to track down the rich woman and find out the meaning behind her harsh words.

The Killer's Game is a film directed by J. J. Perry and written by Rand Ravich and James Coyne, based on the 1997 novel of the same name by Jay Bonansinga. The film stars Dave Bautista, Sofia Boutella, Terry Crews, Pom Klementieff and Ben Kingsley. Join us for our monthly movie discussion on Zoom! First up will be our regular icebreaker round where we go “around the room” and invite everyone to talk about a movie you’ve watched recently. Give us a short summary, how you saw it and a recommendation or a warning.

At 8 o'clock we'll pivot to a group discussion based on the theme for 2024, the once-a-decade Sight and Sound Greatest Films of All Time poll. September's movie is the singular thriller The Night of the Hunter (1955). The only film directed by actor Charles Laughton, it features unforgettable performances by Robert Mitchum, Lillian Gish and Shelley Winters. The screenplay is by the acclaimed novelist and film critic James Agee. Although considered a failure on its release, it would later influence a number of important American and European directors. A quick Google search shows that it's streaming on Hoopla and Prime among other services.
