What we're about
Upcoming events (5)
Let's get together to talk movies (on Zoom).
We will start with a round table of discussion of "Last Movie Seen." We will each share about a movie that we have seen recently. Be prepared to give us a short summary, how you saw it and a recommendation or a warning. It is a great way to build up your movie queue.
After "Last Movie Seen", we will discuss our Movie of the Month, Burning. A young man meets a girl he admired in high school. They develop a relationship, but then she brings a mysterious stranger back with her from a trip. The stranger is played by the Oscar nominated, Steven Yeun. Burning is streaming on Amazon Prime, Hulu and Hoopla. Hoopla is a free streaming service that you can get with your library card.
I will share the Zoom link one hour before our meetup as a message and as a comment. Please do us a favor and turn on your screen and say hello as soon as you join us. We look forward to talking movies with you.
Join us for “In the Heights”, the big screen adaptation of the Broadway musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda. After the movie we’ll go to a nearby restaurant for discussion. Meetup time is 1:30 and showtime is 1:45. We’ll meet in the lobby before the movie and will reconvene in the lobby before going on to the restaurant.
Under the Skin is a 2013 science fiction film directed by Jonathan Glazer and written by Glazer and Walter Campbell, loosely based on the 2000 novel by Michel Faber. It stars Scarlett Johansson as an otherworldly woman who preys on men in Scotland. The film premiered at Telluride Film Festival on 29 August 2013. It was released in the United Kingdom on 14 March 2014, North America on 4 April 2014, Switzerland on 23 July 2014, and worldwide on 10 August 2014.
Glazer developed Under the Skin for over a decade; he and co-screenwriter Walter Campbell pared it back from an elaborate, special effects-heavy concept to a sparse story focusing on an alien perspective of the human world. Most of the cast was chosen from applicants without previous acting experience, and many scenes were filmed with hidden cameras.
Under the Skin received acclaim for Johansson's performance, Glazer's direction, and Mica Levi's score. It received numerous accolades and awards; it was named the best film of the year by various critics and publications, was included in many best-of-the-decade lists, and was ranked 61st on the BBC's 100 Greatest Films of the 21st Century list.
Let's Talk Movies (Outside)!
It is summer, and it is time to go outside to talk movies.
We will start with "Last Movie Seen", a roundtable discussion about a movie that you have recently seen. Come prepared to share a short description about the plot, how you saw it, and whether you recommend it or warn against it. It's a great way to develop a list of movies to check out. After that, we will discuss whatever movie topics that spring to mind.
This is a physically distanced event. We are sitting at a group of 9 picnic tables, and many of us bring our own chairs, so there is plenty of opportunity to spread out. Plus, we are outside!
I am going to Charlie Brown this. I am going to be out there ready to talk movies, come rain or shine. "There is no bad weather, only bad clothes."
We look forward to talking movies with you, outside!
