What we’re about
Situated in the multicultural, heritage suburb of Croydon in Sydney's inner west, our activities link ancient wisdom with contemporary society.
Through spiritual talks and discussion exploring the mystical, practical teachings of many faiths; through silent and guided meditations; yoga classes; retreats; festivals; theatre; and more - we provide an open-minded, reflective and creative space.
All activities are held in our renovated century-old building; comfortable, peaceful and spacious with soaring ceilings.
In keeping with our Indian/ Asian ambience shoes are left at the door. Disabled access provided.
Talks are given by Pravrajika Gayatriprana and Pravrajika Sridharaprana, senior nuns of Sri Sarada Math, the women’s wing of the Ramakrishna Order. Sri Sarada Math’s first centre outside India was established in Sydney in 1982.
The Ramakrishna Order was established in 1897 by Swami Vivekananda, one of the first to bring meditation and yoga philosophy to the West. He represented Hinduism at the first World Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893. Since its inception the Ramakrishna Order has served millions through its relief and rehabilitation work and many schools and hospitals.

SEEING CONSCIOUSNESS IN OTHERS: A profound spiritual evolutionary gap lies between these two ways of perceiving others: (i) Seeing them just as minds and bodies, OR, (ii) Perceiving them as 'consciousness, enlivening a body and mind.' As we evolve, increasingly we will perceive what lies beyond 'the mask of mind and body.'
-
KNOWING THE ESSENCE: 'The fact is, there is nothing called a pot apart from clay. There is nothing called a wave apart from water. There is nothing called ornament apart from gold. There is nothing called colour apart from electromagnetic radiation … So also, there is nothing called a world apart from Brahman… Existence, Consciousness, Bliss Absolute.
-
WHO AM I?: On the path to answering a most significant question, 'Who Am I?', we need to link to Consciousness***,*** the unchanging, unlimited essence of us. Consciousness is 'the light of awareness in our eyes. We are more the light in our eyes than we are those eyes.'

Study of Chapter 14:
## The Forces of Evolution - The Three Guna:
## Verses 21- 25
## Discussion Themes:
- PROTECTION FROM WINTRY BLASTS: Just as we've dressed well, protecting ourselves in layers of warmth in the wintry weather of these past weeks, we also need to layer ourselves in the strengthening solace of spirituality. Accessing even a little of the infinite inner strength within helps us rise above life's vagaries.
- MANAGING ABUSE: 'Sri Ramakrishna said, when a person abuses you, you just hear what that person says and clear out what these words mean. Convert the words into letters, sounds, etc. It is just nothing more than a combination of letters and sounds. This kind of capacity to react to situations is a spiritual capacity. Everybody can develop this capacity.'
- NATURAL BALANCE: Through homeostasis, nature maintains a state of balance in all our bodily systems, ensuring our body survives and functions correctly. It is up to us to achieve a higher level of homeostasis by steadying the mind and emotions.
- BEYOND FEVERISH ACTIVITY: There will come a time in our evolution where the feverish tendency to seek out more and more activities and projects will subside. At this advanced stage, we will be content with simply doing the essential things as they arise. No longer running after things, we will only do what is needed to preserve the body.
We're a multicultural group of varying ages, including our Vedanta Society members and friends. We always welcome new faces and hear new perspectives.
