Current Status of Wolves and Lynx in Switzerland
Details
The Swiss Alpines had four predators: brown bears, wolves, lynx, and otters. We are happy to offer a presentation from Gabor von Bethlenfalvy - WWF CH, about two of the most popular predators: the wolf and the lynx.
The lynx has been protected in Switzerland since 1962. This and other conservation efforts has allowed the lynx to grow to a population of around 300, which is the only significant, contiguous lynx population in the Alpine region. This means immigration cannot help expand the gene pool, and its primary challenge is a declining, genetically diverse, gene pool.
Before the 19th century, there were hundreds of wolves living in Switzerland but by the beginning of the 20th century there were none. As the wolf population in Italy expanded, they began migrating into the Swiss Mountains.
Join us as we explore:
What is being done to reduce the wolf attacks and the conflict, between the wolves and humans?
Can we distinguish between wolf attacks and dog attacks on the livestock?
How are farmers supported to protect their herds from wolf attacks?
Are lynx also a problem for the farmers?
What are the myths and facts about the interactions between these two natural predators and humans within Switzerland?
NOTE: This event will be a hybrid event and recorded, so that you can watch it later.
