Let's Climb a couple of Mountains in the Dark!
Details
It will be dark so bring a torch and I suggest a walking pole for some of the more hilly spots.
Meet near 10 Patey St which is off Market Road (close to Remuera Train Station) or Great South Road.
This walk will explore Remuera, and Epsom include climbing Mt Hobson and Mt St Johns.
There will be several hill climbs on this walk. It's about 7.5 kms and we will be walking through a number of parks.
The walk will start on time at 6.30 so please ensure you are there ready to walk by 6.25pm.
There are no toilets on this walk.
Depending on the route we take it may take two hours.
Mount Saint John (also Te Kōpuke or Tītīkōpuke) is a volcanic scoria cone in Epsom, in the Auckland volcanic field of New Zealand. It has a peak 126 metres above sea level and a crater around 150 m wide. It was the site of a pā, and has retained Māori earthworks from that era such as kumara pits and terracing. The age of Mount St John is currently unknown but is older than 28,500 years old as the scoria cone is mantled in ash from Te Tatua-a-Riukiuta volcano.
The crater of Mount Saint John
Mount St John is now known to be the source of the long lava flow that ran west down an old stream valley and out into the Waitemata Harbour as Meola Reef. Maungawhau / Mount Eden later erupted through the lava flow.
Ōhinerau / Mount Hobson (also known as Ōhinerangi and Remuwera) is a 143 m high volcanic cone in the Auckland volcanic field in Auckland, New Zealand
Please note we will begin to request a gold coin donation for participation in order to cover some of the costs incurred by the leaders for their organisation. Items such as outdoor magazine subscriptions, safety equipment (eg PLB) and the website costs etc.
Our Intrepid bank account is 06-0996-0609501-04 if you want to transfer money for the gold coin donation. (Use your meetup name as a reference.)
Group members have indicated that they like to walk in a smaller group with a preferred maximum of 25. Therefore the limit on our walks will remain at 25. Thank you for your understanding :-) We will leave on time in fairness to the whole group.
