Details
Let's gather for an immersive Sake Tasting Experience during Cherry Blossom season, exploring the rich history, craftsmanship, and diverse styles of Japan’s iconic rice wine. The event was designed to educate attendees on the primary ingredients of sake and guide them through a curated tasting of different styles.
What to expect
1. We begin by discussing the four essential ingredients of sake:
- Rice – The heart of sake, with different polishing levels influencing flavor.
- Water – A crucial component, affecting texture and minerality.
- Koji Mold – Essential for converting rice starches into fermentable sugars.
- Yeast – Responsible for sake’s aroma and alcohol development.
2. Different styles. Guests will explore and compare the characteristics of five key sake styles:
- Junmai – A pure rice sake with no added alcohol, known for its full body and umami depth.
- Honjozo – A smooth and lighter style with a small amount of distilled alcohol added to enhance aroma.
- Ginjo – A premium sake with rice polished to at least 60%, offering floral and fruity notes.
- Daiginjo – The highest grade of sake, with rice polished to at least 50%, producing elegant and refined flavors.
- Nigori – An unfiltered sake with a cloudy appearance and a slightly sweet, creamy texture.
3. Tasting experience. Sake will be served at its ideal temperature, allowing participants to appreciate differences in aroma, body, and finish. The tasting was complemented with food pairings designed to highlight the unique flavors of each style.
4. Final thoughts. Attendees left with a deeper understanding of sake craftsmanship and a newfound appreciation for its versatility. Whether enjoying a crisp Ginjo or a rich Nigori, the experience showcased the artistry behind each bottle.
