Details
We start a new book and a new discussion emphasis in Post-Renaissance and Modern Philosophy and we invite you back to join us:
September 19, Thursday, 10:30-noon, University Park Public Library
(4512 Sandburg, Irvine).
The Existentialist's Survival Guide, Gordon Marino, PhD....
The first reading assignment is the Introduction and Ch. 1, "Anxiety" (pp. 1-56). (Barnes & Noble or on-line).
This Third Rock from the Sun "shifted" in it's philosophical orbit from around 1600 to our time as Humanism, scientific discovery and political experimentation exploded in a post-religious world that left mankind unsure of any tether, of any certainty and the parade of thinkers like Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Sartre and Dostoyevsky, Hume and Kant, Camus and Freud offered paths through the cultural chaos in which, make no mistake, we live today.
Mankind had been battered by centuries of war and inhumanity, disillusioned with the traditional "eternal verities" and overwhelmed by the outward expansion of the Universe in which humans struggled to understand, to hold balance and find meaning.
Sound familiar?
Because that's why it's called "existentialism" for making sense of existence...our existence!
