Celebrating Italian-Canadian Heritage in Edmonton
Edmonton is home to vibrant reminders of the Italian-Canadian community’s history and contributions — from beautifully crafted monuments to engaging museum exhibits that explore culture, migration, and everyday life.
One notable important cultural site is the Italian Museum of Alberta, located within the Ital-Canadian Seniors’ Centre in Edmonton’s Little Italy district. Established in 2009, the museum was developed with the leadership of community volunteers, including Maria Mauro, President of the Ital-Canadian Seniors Association, and researcher Adriana A. Davies, and it houses a collection of artifacts and exhibits donated by members of the community. These exhibits include stories of Italian immigrants, traditional objects, and two travelling displays — “Alberta’s Italian Community” and “People of the Coal Mines: The Italian Community” — that help share the rich history of Italians in Alberta and beyond.
The museum and its archives serve an important educational purpose, welcoming not just seniors but all visitors interested in learning about the culture, traditions, and experiences of Italian-Canadians. Through partnerships and projects like the “Memory Lane” oral history initiative, youth from the community have helped capture the stories of Italian pioneers, preserving them for future generations.
Both the monument and the museum reflect Edmonton’s multicultural heritage and the ongoing efforts of the NCIC and the Ital-Canadian Seniors’ Association to honour, preserve, and share Italian-Canadian history in ways that educate, inspire, and bring people together.
Celebrating Our Heritage: Italian-Canadian Monument at the Alberta Legislature
We are proud to recognize an important cultural landmark that stands on the grounds of the Alberta Legislature Building in Edmonton — the Italian Monument, which honours the many contributions Italian immigrants and their descendants have made to the province of Alberta.
Unveiled in 2007, this monument was a gift to the people of Alberta from the National Congress of Italian-Canadians (NCIC), Edmonton District, in celebration of Alberta’s rich multicultural heritage and the Italian-Canadian community’s role in shaping our social and economic landscape.
The NCIC, established in 1979, works to preserve Italian culture, history, and heritage in Edmonton and beyond, and the monument is one of several ways the organization recognizes the community’s contributions.
Over the years, special guests and community leaders have participated in commemorations and events celebrating the monument and the broader Italian heritage in Alberta. These occasions serve as a reminder of the deep cultural ties that enrich our province and honour the hard work, traditions, and stories of Italian-Canadian Albertans.
We encourage everyone to visit the Legislature grounds and reflect on the diverse histories represented there — including this monument dedicated to the Italian-Canadian community.
