Overcoming Average - NoVa Chapter
This group was originally started by Chad Keith who created and hosts a podcast by the same name in Charlotte, NC. I am hoping to continue his legacy here in NoVa as I recently moved to this area. This group is all about finding community around self-improvement and exchanging ideas on how to be your best self and get the most out of life. This group is for anyone who is interested in overcoming average in all areas - career, ambitions, relationships, hobbies, health, everything.
I am so excited to meet driven individuals in the NoVa area so please reach out if you have any questions at all. EVERYONE is welcome so please sign up for an upcoming meetup!

**What to expect?**
✨ Relaxed, **self-led** gathering
🤝 Small group energy
🌍 Travel stories, tips & shared adventures
🍹 Grab a drink or snack if you like
**How it works?**
This is a self-led meetup, meaning I set it up for you but the magic happens between you.
To make sure everyone finds each other smoothly, please follow these simple coordination steps:
1️⃣ **RSVP** Thoughtfully
If you’re planning to come, tap “Going.”
It helps others feel confident joining and builds momentum before the meetup.
Even if you’re 80% sure, RSVP.
If your plans change, please update your RSVP so others aren’t expecting your attendance.
2️⃣ **Confirm 2 Hours Before** (Essential)
To ensure the meetup runs, please comment on this event page at least 2 hours before the start time:
“Confirmed for today 😊”
This allows everyone to see, ahead of time, who is actually coming.
The meetup moves forward when at least 2 people confirm 2 hours before the event.
If fewer than 2 confirmations are posted by then, attendance may be low that day.
This avoids anyone showing up uncertain.
3️⃣ **Signal Your Arrival**
When you arrive, comment on this event page:
“Arrived” + where you’re sitting + what you’re wearing
Example:
“Arrived. Sitting outside near the entrance. Wearing a black t-shirt.”
This ensures everyone can easily find each other.
Recognition Tip
Having a clear profile photo on Meetup is highly encouraged — it makes recognition effortless and helps the group form faster.
**When & Where?**
📅 Day: Every Tuesday & Saturday
🕓 Time: **4:00 PM local time**

**About Just Gutsy**
**Just Gutsy** is a global community for solo travelers who are free spirited, love exploring the world believe that real connections make the best memories.
Hi, I am Syrine,
I started solo traveling in 2018 and it changed my life, from introvert to extrovert. Along the way, I loved meeting people, but also felt how hard it can be to find connection when traveling alone.
I’m building Just Gutsy so no one has to feel alone on the road — and so anyone who’s still shy to take that first step has a welcoming place to start. 💛

Criminalizing DC Youth: The Politics of Curfews & the Need for Community Control
As DC officials consider a renewed juvenile curfew in the name of “public safety,” a familiar pattern is emerging: the criminalization of working-class Black youth and the expansion of state control over our communities. Curfews do not address the root causes of harm—lack of resources, disinvestment, and exclusion from decision-making. Instead, they give police broader authority to stop, surveil, and detain our youth simply for existing in public space.
This [Assata Shakur Study Group](https://pacapower.org/our-work/programs/assg/ "https://pacapower.org/our-work/programs/assg/") session will examine how curfew policies function as tools of social control, not solutions to violence. We will break down the political logic behind “tough on crime” approaches and expose how they shift responsibility away from the city and onto youth themselves. At the same time, we will explore [PACA’s vision for community control](https://pacapower.org/our-work/campaigns/community-control-dc/ "https://pacapower.org/our-work/campaigns/community-control-dc/"), one where residents, not police, have real decision-making power over safety, resources, and the conditions that shape our lives.
*Food will be provided!*

Humanist Program
The Humanist Monthly Program is our longest running event and still a community favorite. In the old days it used to be called "Going to HCCO" and we still like to think of it as our flagship event.
We will be hearing from Becca Powell, Director of Advocacy and Outreach at Unchained At Last, an organization whose mission is dedication to ending forced and child marriage in the United States through direct services and systems change. Unchained At Last's mission clearly meshes and addresses several of our Humanist Ten Commitments. Becca will educate us about an issue many of us may not be familiar with--but should be.
Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk.
Going forward our meetings will be hybrid. You can meet us in-person or attend online

Contra dance with Big Scioty April 11 - Clinton Heights Lutheran church
**Caller: Kim Thompson**
**Band: Full Moon Country Dance Orchestra**
**Clinton Heights Lutheran Church**
**15 Clinton Heights Ave, Columbus, OH 43202**
WHAT IS CONTRA DANCING? Picture the Grand Ball scenes like you’ve seen in period films such as “Pride and Prejudice”, where the dancers are lined up in long lines, across from each other. That’s English Country Dancing, the predecessor of contra dancing. Now, add moves like “swing your partner” and “do-si-do,” like you’ve seen in square dancing. Set it to fabulous, high energy, live music with fiddles, guitars, percussion and more, alá “Riverdance.” Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude. THAT’s Contra Dancing!
Wear cool and comfortable clothes (you will get warm) and clean shoes that won't mark up our nice wood floor.
Be sure to come for the beginner's lesson from 7:30 - 8:00, followed by dancing 8:00 - 10:30. All dances are taught; we will help you learn! Beginners always welcome, no need to bring a partner.
Cost is $10.00 adults, $5.00 ages 12-26. Under 12 free. Free parking in church lot.
For more information contact me or check out our website: [www.bigscioty.com](http://www.bigscioty.com/)
Please bring your own refillable water bottle.
