All riders joining this ride will need to accept the standard MORE liability waiver form. **Wheels down at 6:45pm** Ride will be about 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on the group. The ride leader(s) will try to start as promptly as possible. Bring: Trail-ready mountain bike, helmet, tube, and water. Optional: Tools, gloves, snacks, and lights. We will need lights this time of year. Pace Casual to moderate pace depending on the group. This is a no-drop ride. (A drop is leaving someone behind who is slower than the group. All riding abilities are welcome, but it is recommended riders have a few off-road rides under their belts first. Terrain Wakefield is generally considered easier to intermediate by most riders. There are a few small stream crossings and some log obstacles. Riders should use good judgment and dismount when in doubt. The ride will typically consist of a mix of single track, fire roads, and other trail sections in the park. Fairland Intermediate Ride (Parking @ The Ice House)
Fairland Intermediate Ride (Parking @ The Ice House)
Come join us for a 11-12 mile ride at a Fairland. We normally average 10mph+. Wheels rolling at 6pm unless someone texts me they're running a little late. We normally do 10-12 miles, and average 10mph. This ride is more for faster than average riders due to the pace. We wait up at intersections to let all riders catch up. If you have a good amount of rides under your belt and can average 8mph or better on singletrack trails, and take small brakes, then you will probably will be able to hang but it will be a challenge. About Fairland: 90% non-technical ride with few major climbs and no mandatory obstacles (they all have ride-arounds). Promise, no rocks. None! (there is one section of busted-up concrete, but it's not rocks, and it's only 10-15 feet long). Anyway, there are a couple good places to stop and practice log-overs, and balance on the boardwalks, and some good flow trails. We will visit the skills pit but be advised, there are drops, jumps, skinnies, and overall technical features that will require the appropriate experience. Always take caution and know your technical ability limits. Video of our ride at Fairland: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1-b0EDVb08](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1-b0EDVb08) What to bring: Plenty of water, helmet (no helmet no ride), your mtb of course!, multi-tool (although you can borrow mine), patch kit, extra tube (make sure it has the same valve you need for your wheel), a snack if you're doing both loops. Here at MVD MTB'ers meetup page, we always appreciate any feedback, write a group review!( Here ([http://www.meetup.com/MVDMountainBikers/about/comments/?op=all](http://www.meetup.com/MVDMountainBikers/about/comments/?op=all))

SNP Sugarloaf Blooms 5 Mi 1120 Ft Moderate Hike
**This hike offers a great view and spring flowering bushes in the north district Shenandoah National Park. Floral highlights to be on the lookout for are the incredibly fragrant wild azalea and blooming a bit later, the pale pink to white, star-shaped clusters of mountain laurel. The trail is rocky in parts and there are small, mostly rock hop water crossings. We typically hike about 2.0 mph when moving. Bus leaves at 8 a.m. SHARP, so it's essential to arrive well before 8 am. * **[Vienna Metro: NORTH parking lot](http://bit.ly/vienna-bus)**, last bus shelter (Nutley St. Exit off Interstate 66 on North/Vienna side of I-66) at approximately 8:25 a.m. Park at 9486 Virginia Center Blvd, Vienna, VA 22181 * * Caution: The "south" parking lot also has bus shelters. If by 8:15, you're not with a group of Wanderbirds hikers, you may be in the south lot. There's a walkway that passes the fare gates over I-66 to the north lot. **RESERVATIONS** Wanderbirds Hiking Club is a 501(c)(7) non-profit, and the public is invited on all hiking trips. Reservations are accepted as late as Saturday, but reserving as early in the week as possible helps ensure your spot and prevent cancellation of the hike due to low sign-ups. RSVP through Meetup and pay through PayPal. Please be sure your RSVP gives your full name and phone number and where you'll be boarding the bus. Space permitting, walk-ons are permitted at the second pick-up point. Your hike fee will be paid to one of the hike leaders in either cash or check (we're working on Venmo / Zelle). **FIRST-TIME HIKERS** If you're a first-time hiker with us, please notify the leaders in advance so they can make sure you have the info you need. Hikers must be able to keep a 2-mph pace. New hikers are required to first complete a moderate hike. Liability Waiver: Many of our hikes take place in remote wilderness areas where cell phone service is not available. Any person participating in any Club activity is responsible for their own safety, health and welfare, and must assume all risks and liabilities related to all Club activities. The Club, its hike leaders, hike sweeps, officers, and other representatives are not liable for any injuries, losses, or damage to persons, children, pets, and/or property, arising from any trips or activities of the Club. You are responsible for bringing enough water, food, and first aid supplies, including those for your personal medical conditions. **CANCELLATION POLICY** Cancellations sometimes play havoc with our hiker accountability as the hike leaders print out the rider list from the MeetUp sign-up website. If the RSVP is not complete or up-to-date, neither is our check-in list. To cancel and receive a full bus hike refund, less the MeetUp $5 processing fee, you must change your RSVP to "No" on the MeetUp website before NOON on the Friday **before the hike**. If you change your RSVP afterwards, no refunds will be issued. While Metro/carpool/trailhead hike cancellations will not be issued a financial refund, hikers on either bus or trailhead hikes are implored to change their Meetup RSVP to NO so that leaders do not wait for them at either bus stops or the trailhead. **COVID, RSV, or seasonal FLU precautions** . . . Anyone experiencing symptoms of upper respiratory illness should not attend the event. MORE DETAILS -- [SEE THE FAQS ON OUR WEBSITE](http://www.wanderbirds.org/faq.html)

Little Devils Stairs
Little Devils Stairs
Join us on a hike up Little Devils Stairs in Shenandoah National Park. This hike is a rugged and scenic loop that climbs through a narrow gorge alongside Keyser Run, featuring numerous stream crossings, small waterfalls and rocky scrambles that often require using your hands. The first couple of miles are the most strenuous, with a steep ascent up the “stairs” of boulders and roots, while constant views of cascading water and the surrounding forest make the effort worthwhile. Near the top, the trail levels out and transitions to a quieter return along a fire road through woods and past a historic cemetery, offering occasional valley views before descending back to the trailhead. Overall, it’s a challenging but rewarding hike known for its mix of water features, elevation gain and varied terrain. Total hiking distance will be approximately 5.6 miles. Combined with an elevation gain of close to 1,500 feet, this is considered a strenuous hike. Participants should have some hiking experience and be in good physical condition. Wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring a daypack with snacks, lunch (we’ll make a pit stop on the trip out), raingear (mountain weather can be fickle!) and at least two quarts of water. This cost for this trip is the $5 Adventuring fee, plus $15 for your driver if you participate in the carpool. Additionally, there is a $30/vehicle entrance fee for Shenandoah National Park but usually we have enough hikers with National Park passes to cover each vehicle. There will be an optional dinner stop on the trip home. Due to very limited parking at the trailhead, carpooling is encouraged. We will meet at the East Falls Church Metro Kiss and Ride lot at 8:30. This is the small parking lot at the corner of Sycamore and 19th St N, not the main parking lot. If you’re walking out of the station, turn right to find us. Parking in Metro lots is free on weekends if you leave your vehicle. For those meeting us at the trailhead, we will convene by 10:30. Please note we will start from trailhead at the boundary parking area on Keyser Run Road, not from Skyline Drive (use “Little Devils Stairs Loop Trail” on Google Maps). IMPORTANT NOTE: When you RSVP to an event, you affirm that you have read and agree to the terms of the release. Please **[click here](https://adventuringlgbtq.com/Adventuring_Release_Form.pdf)** to review our release form. All participants must register on their own behalf.

Day Hike - Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve (7.5 Miles) + Quattro Goombas
Banshee Reeks, designated as a Virginia State Treasure in 2016, is a 695-acre nature preserve located near Leesburg, VA. Protected under a permanent conservation easement, the property's 20 miles of hiking trails allow visitors to observe the diversity of flora and fauna that call the preserve home. We will meet at the Vienna South Metro Station at 9:00 AM and carpool to the trailhead. Drive time is about 45 minutes. Please post a comment below if you are willing to drive. Carpooling saves the environment and makes friends. ## **Trail Facts** * **Difficulty Level: Easy** * **Length:** 7.5 Miles * **Duration:** 3-4 hrs * **Elevation Gain:** 466 Feet * **Permits:** None * **Parking:** Vienna South Metro Station * **Dogs:** Must be leashed and under control at all times. * **Trailhead Coordinates:** 39.028277603032315, -77.5997077224149 * **[AllTrails Map](https://www.alltrails.com/explore/map/map-february-16-2025-f4f691a?u=i&sh=kucj8c)** **Trail Details:** Our route through Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve will showcase varied habitat types, including meadows, forests, and wetlands. We will pass by Goose Creek, a State Scenic River, two small ponds, and a few of the structures that were used when this property was a farm. Depending on time and interest, we can stop by the Visitor Center before or after the hike to chat with the friendly staff and check out the exhibits. If you'd like to learn more about Banshee Reeks and its history, please visit [the preserve website](https://bansheereeksnp.org/). If you end up driving, the trailhead coordinates will take you to the main parking lot, which is about 5 minutes into the preserve after you pass through the entrance gate. If for some reason that lot is full then you can park in the overflow lot, which you will pass on your drive in. There is a restroom available inside the Visitor Center for you to use both before and after the hike. **Banshee Reeks is a nature preserve and is not treated for ticks, so please make sure to bring and apply the appropriate repellent before the hike.** On the way back, I plan to stop at Quattro Goombas Winery and Craft Brewery in Aldie, VA. Hi ladies. We will meet in front of the Nature Center and head to the two Observation decks. Please wear appropriate hiking shoes.

Hike Chestnut Ridge
We will hike the Ridge Trail and Meadows Trail twice, for a total of 3.8 miles. There are some pretty good inclines so plan on getting a cardio workout :). This is a loop which is pretty easy to follow; thus faster walkers can take the lead and the rest (like me) will bring up the rear at a slightly slower pace. You could also just do the loop once for 1.9 miles. No one left behind. Optional lunch to follow in Canal Winchester. I'm working through the metro parks - this is the third one!
