About us
Jacksonville Skeptics is a community for anyone who values reason, evidence, critical thinking, and scientific inquiry.
We apply skeptical inquiry broadly—to science and health claims, politics and public policy, psychology, religion, popular beliefs, current events, pseudoscience, and the many other claims we encounter in everyday life.
Our goal is not to gather people who already agree with one another. We want to ask good questions, examine evidence, distinguish what we know from what we merely suspect, recognize the limits of what can be known, and be willing to change our minds when the evidence warrants it.
Our events include social gatherings and discussions focused on skeptical inquiry, reasoning, evidence, and critical thinking.
Our events include two recurring series:
Skeptics in the Pub is our informal social gathering—a chance to meet other people interested in skepticism, science, reason, and critical thinking in a relaxed setting.
Beyond Socrates: Learning to Reason is our monthly discussion series focused on how we reason, evaluate evidence, and decide what to believe. Some meetings examine a specific real-world question or controversial claim. Others use books on reasoning, judgment, cognition, scientific thinking, and rationality as a starting point for discussion. Reading the book is encouraged when there is one, but it is never required.
We ask that people come willing to think critically, support their claims with reasons and evidence, listen to competing ideas, and extend the same scrutiny to their own beliefs that they apply to everyone else’s.
