August 30, 8:00 am Church Hill, Oakwood and Evergreen Cemeteries

Some of my hikes include much historical commentary, and others are primarily just hikes. This one is in the former category so expect to make frequent stops to discuss the historical sites we'll come by.

The last time we took this 10.5 mile hike it took 6 1/2 hours for the hike and longer to include the Poe's Pub lunch.

On Oct. 6 we hiked this 10.27 miles in 5 h 39 min. and again followed with lunch at Poe's Pub.

We will begin at Great Shiplock Park,

and tour historical Chapel Island where James River Hikers recently completed construction of 3/4 miles of hiking trails.

and head uphill to the soldiers and Sailor's Monument.

Then we'll go St. John's Church

and explore the surrounding neighborhood with it's many historical homes.

Then we'll go to Chimborazo Park, site of the massive hospital complex during the War Between the States.

From there we'll go to Evergreen Cemetery where Maggie Walker is interned

and to Oakwood Cemetery, the third largest Confederate Cemetery in America.

We'll return back to Chimborazo Park, view the Statue of Liberty monument

and head back downhill and have lunch at Poe's Pub.

Finally We'll return to our starting point.
