Jul 27, 9 AM - Texas Beach to the Carillon Hike

Details
This three mile hike follows the historic Kanawah Canal from the Texas Beach Parking Lot to the equally historic Pump House. We will climb up the hill by way of the Dogwood Dell Trail to the Carillon and continue around Shields Lake in Byrd Park, through the Maymont Nature Center and back through the surrounding neighborhoods to Texas Beach.
We'll be on the North Bank Trail (see photo) due to bridge repairs currently underway at the Texas Beach pedesterian crossover. We'll have to save Foushee's Mill, Charlie's Crossing, the railroad tracks and the riverside trail for another day but there will be an abundance of other sights and sounds to capture your attention!
As with all hikes, this one begins at the posted time, not five or ten minutes later. If you are unfamiliar with the meet up location, add a few minutes to your travel schedule so you will not arrive at an empty parking lot (seriously). Some ability to negotiate tree roots, rustic trails, low hanging vines, toxic plants, culverts, reptiles, damp trail conditions, stairs, spider webs, fallen trees, scorpions, skunks, migratory waterfowl, and river rocks is desirable. Hiking sticks are recommended though not required.
