Aug 24, 9 AM ~ Virginia War Memorial to Church Hill Hike

This five mile hike will begin and end at the intersection of 2nd & Spring Streets near the Virginia War Memorial. Our tour of many Richmond landmarks will take us from the War Memorial to the State Capitol. From there we will visit the site of Lumpkin's Jail and the Slave Burial Ground. Next we will turn North on 18th Street and visit the site of the 1925 C & O Tunnel cave in before we climb the stairs to Jefferson Park. St. John's Church marks the halfway point of our hike, so we will begin the return leg of our hike on 25th Street which will take us to the Capital Trail, which we'll follow until we transition to the Canal Walk. After we pass the Newport Cross we're almost there! Crossing Brown's Island and picking up Tredegar Street, we'll turn for home on Brown's Island Way. Hope you still have some gas in the tank - that last hill will test you!

All hikes will begin at the posted time, not five or ten minutes later. If you are unfamiliar with the meet up location, add a few minutes to your travel schedule so you can find us. When you select "Directions" (upper left) the best route from your location to the Meet Up rendezvous spot will be calculated for you. Before the hike be sure to place anything that might invite theft in your trunk before you leave your car parked while you are hiking.
Limited parking is available on 2nd Street, Oregon Hill Parkway and the War Memorial parking lot off of Rowe Street.

There is no requirement to possess some ability to negotiate tree roots, rustic trails, low hanging vines and branches, toxic plants, culverts, reptiles, damp trail conditions, stairs, spider webs, fallen trees, scorpions, birds of prey, migratory waterfowl, and river rocks today as this hike will be entirely on paved streets and sidewalks.
