Details
What we will do; meet at the Appomattox Regional Library Parking lot. Leave promptly at the start time, earlier if everyone is present. We will then go over to City Park and and stroll along the boardwalk on the Appomattox River. As we leave the park we will take a few minutes to investigate the cemetery (dating from the mid 1800's) on the hillside. From there we will walk along Riverside Ave., enjoying the view of the Appomattox river and the unique houses along this street. There are also some Sears Kit houses along this stretch. Our next stop will be St. John's Episcopal Church, where we will tour the interesting church grounds. If we are lucky we might run into Rev. Bill and get a tour of the church. It's a beautiful church dating from the mid 1800's with magnificent stained glass windows. After this we will head down to City Point which was General Grant's Headquarters during the War of Northern Aggression. After touring the grounds and buildings we will head down the hill to Old City Point Waterfront Park. From there is a nice view of the Benjamin Harrison drawbridge which connects Prince George County to New Kent County. From here we will stroll along the James River and back up the hill to the City Point Historical neighborhood. We are going to take our time and enjoy the many interesting and historical buildings in this neighborhood. Along with another cemetery dating from the mid 1800's. From here we return to our starting point. For those who care to we will try and find a place for coffee afterwards. We will follow all Covid-19 guidelines.
